حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، وَأَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الدِّمْيَاطِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، كُلُّهُمْ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ، أَنَّهَا دَخَلَتْ عَلَى أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ - زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - حِينَ تُوُفِّيَ أَبُوهَا أَبُو سُفْيَانَ، فَدَعَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ بِطِيبٍ فِيهِ صُفْرَةٌ خَلُوقٌ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ، فَدَهَنَتْ مِنْهُ جَارِيَةً، ثُمَّ مَسَّتْ بِعَارِضَيْهَا، ثُمَّ قَالَتْ: أَمَا وَاللهِ مَا لِي بِالطِّيبِ مِنْ حَاجَةٍ غَيْرَ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ تُحِدُّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثِ لَيَالٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا»
Zaynab bint Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she went to Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when her father Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away. Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) called for a yellow perfume, or some other perfume, and applied it to a slave girl, then also applied it to her own two cheeks. Then she said: By Allah! I have no need of perfume, except that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three nights, except for a husband, for whom she mourns four months and ten days."
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، أَنَّهُ لَمَّا جَاءَ نَعْيُ أَبِيهَا دَعَتْ بِطِيبٍ فَمَسَحَتْ بِهِ ذِرَاعَيْهَا، وَقَالَتْ: وَاللهِ مَا لِي بِالطِّيبِ مِنْ حَاجَةٍ، لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ تُحِدُّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثِ لَيَالٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا»
Zaynab bint Abi Salamah narrates that when Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) received the news of the death of her father Abu Sufyan, she called for perfume and applied it to her arms, and said: By Allah! I would have no need of perfume had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three nights, except for a husband, for whom she mourns four months and ten days."
حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، حَدَّثَنِي أَيُّوبُ بْنُ مُوسَى، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ، قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثِ لَيَالٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا»
Zaynab bint Abi Salamah narrates from Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three nights, except for a husband, for whom she mourns four months and ten days."

Zaynab bint Abi Salamah narrates, through Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three nights, except for a husband."
حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ الْقَاضِي، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ، قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ»
Zaynab bint Abi Salamah narrates from Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for a husband."
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْقَطَرَانِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَوْنٍ أَبُو عَوْنٍ الزِّيَادِيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، وَأُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً قَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ ابْنَتِي تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا وَقَدْ خَشِيتُ عَلَى بَصَرِهَا أَفَأَكْحُلُهَا؟، قَالَ: «كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ تَرْمِي بِالْبَعْرَةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْحَوْلِ وَإِنَّمَا هِيَ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا»
Zaynab bint Abi Salamah narrates from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman said: O Messenger of Allah! My daughter's husband has died, and I fear for her eyes; may I apply kohl to her? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of you used to throw a piece of dung at the end of a full year, and this is only four months and ten days."
حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ الْقَاضِي، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً، سَأَلَتْ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ، وَأُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ: أَتَكْتَحِلُ الْمَرْأَةُ فِي عِدَّتِهَا مِنْ وَفَاةِ زَوْجِهَا؟، فَقَالَتْ: أَتَتِ امْرَأَةٌ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلَتْهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: «كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ إِذَا تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا أَقَامَتْ سَنَةً، ثُمَّ تَقْذِفُ بِبَعْرَةٍ، فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا حَتَّى يَمْضِيَ الْأَجَلُ» .
A woman asked Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her): May a woman apply kohl during her waiting period ('iddah) after the death of her husband? One of them said: A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him this very question, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the time of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), when the husband of one of you died, she would remain in mourning for a year, then throw a piece of dung; this is only four months and ten days, until the term is completed."
حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، تَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ، وَأُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ تَذْكُرَانِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قِصَّةَ الْعِدَّةِ
Zaynab bint Abi Salamah narrates: I heard Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) relating the account of the waiting period ('iddah) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
