It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a gold ring on a man's hand, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to strike it with his stick. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his attention away, the man threw the ring away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We must have caused you pain and loss."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his hand with a stick that was in his own hand. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his attention away from him, the man threw his ring away. He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at him and asked: "Where is your ring?" He said: I threw it away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I think we must have caused you pain and loss."
