It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hazzal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said to Ma'iz bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): Go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and tell him about your matter. So he came to him and informed him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him several times, but he kept repeating it before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Finally the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to his people and asked: "Is he insane?" They said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is he unmarried or married?" They said: Rather, he is married. The narrator said: So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order and he was stoned. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you, O Hazzal! Had you covered him with your cloak, it would have been better for you."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hazzal (may Allah be pleased with him) that a slave-girl used to graze her family's sheep. A man from among us, called Ma'iz bin Malik, came to her and committed fornication with her. The slave-girl came and informed my grandfather Hazzal, so my grandfather Hazzal began urging him to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and confess, and he would say: Woe to you! If you do not do so, Allah will send down (revelation) to His Messenger and he will tell him about you. He kept saying this until Ma'iz bin Malik came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, this fornication has happened (on my part). He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him three or four times; then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order concerning him and he was stoned. The narrator said: A man came at him with a camel's jawbone and struck his shin with it, so he fell, and then the people stoned him until they killed him, while he was calling out to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for help. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen! Had he come to me, this would not have happened to him." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the man who had urged him (to confess): "Woe to you, O Hazzal! Had you covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his hand on Hazzal's knee.
