Abu Ammar (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) when the people mentioned Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and reviled him. When they had got up, Sayyiduna Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sit, and I will tell you about this man whom they reviled. One day I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyidah Fatimah, Sayyiduna al-Hasan and Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) cast his cloak over them, then said: 'O Allah, these are my household (Ahl al-Bayt). O Allah, remove impurity from them and purify them thoroughly.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, and me too?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'And you too.'" Sayyiduna Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "By Allah, in my view this is the deed of mine I rely on most."

Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I wanted to meet Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) but did not find him. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "He has gone to call the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); (wait) until he comes." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and he (Ali) was with him. The two of them went in, and I went in with them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called al-Hasan and al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) and seated each of them on one of his thighs, and drew Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) close to his lap, then wrapped his garment around them both, while I was sitting (nearby) reclining. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you thoroughly" [Surah al-Ahzab: 33]. Then he said: "These are my family, these are my family; they have the greater right." Sayyiduna Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, am I also of your family?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And you are also of my family." Sayyiduna Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: This is among the things I have the greatest hope in.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah chose Banu Kinanah from among the children of Isma'il, and He chose Quraysh from Kinanah, and He chose Banu Hashim from Quraysh, and He chose me from Banu Hashim."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed something that carries a hadd (prescribed punishment), so carry it out on me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) paid no attention to him twice; then the prayer was started. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had concluded with the salam, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed something that carries a hadd, so carry it out on me." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Did you not perform ablution when you came?" He said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And you prayed with us?" He said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then go, for Allah has forgiven you."
