Qabisah bin Dhu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A grandmother (maternal or paternal) came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asking for her share of the inheritance of her son's son or her daughter's son - I do not remember which of the two she was. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I do not find any share for you in the Book of Allah, nor have I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) decide anything for you, and I will ask the people this evening." When he had prayed Zuhr, he turned to the people and said: "A grandmother (maternal or paternal) has come to me asking for her share of the inheritance of her son's son or her daughter's son, and I have not found any share for her in the Book of Allah, nor have I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) decide anything for her. Has any of you heard anything about this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" At that, Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "I witnessed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) deciding a sixth for her." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Did anyone else hear this with you?" Then Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "I witnessed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) deciding a sixth for her." So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave her a sixth. Then, when the caliphate of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, the other grandmother, the counterpart of the first, came to him. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The ruling was only made for someone other than you, but if the two of you are together, the sixth will be divided equally between you, and whichever of you is alone, it is all hers."

Qabisah bin Dhu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A grandmother (paternal or maternal) came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), asking about her inheritance in the Book of Allah. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: "There is no share for you in the Book of Allah, nor do I know of anything for you in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so go back until I ask the people." So he asked the people, and Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her a sixth." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Is there anyone else with you?" Then Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said the same as Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) had said, so Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had a sixth given to her. Then the other grandmother (paternal or maternal) came to Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) asking for her inheritance. He said: "There is no share for you in the Book of Allah, and the ruling that was made was only for someone other than you, and I will not add anything to the fixed shares. But it is that same sixth: if the two of you are together, it will be divided between you, and whichever of you is alone, it is hers." These are the words of the narration of Ibn Abd al-Hakam.
