It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mas'ud bin al-Ajma' (may Allah be pleased with him) that, concerning the Makhzumi woman who had stolen a velvet cloak, he said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): We will pay forty uqiyah as ransom on her behalf. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Her being purified is better for her." And he gave the order, and her hand was cut off.

Sayyiduna Mas'ud bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When that woman stole the velvet cloak, I heard (about it from) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); we found it very grave, and the woman was from Quraysh. So we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and spoke to him; we said: O Messenger of Allah! We will pay forty uqiyah as ransom on her behalf. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Her being purified is better for her." When we sensed gentleness in the tone of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we went to Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) and spoke to him; we said: Intercede for us with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the matter of this woman, and we will pay forty uqiyah as ransom on her behalf. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this effort, he stood up before us to deliver a sermon and said: "O people! Why do you persist so much concerning one of the prescribed punishments (hudud) of Allah that has fallen upon one of the female servants of Allah? By the One in whose Hand is my soul! Even if Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, had committed the same crime that this woman has committed, I would have cut off her hand too." So the people lost hope, and her hand was cut off.

Sayyiduna Mas'ud bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When that woman stole the velvet cloak from the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her hand to be cut off, we found it very grave, and she was a woman from Quraysh. We came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and spoke to him; we said: We will pay forty uqiyah as ransom on her behalf. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Her being purified is better for her." When we sensed gentleness in the tone of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we came to Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said to him: How long shall we keep speaking to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the matter of this woman, while we are offering forty uqiyah as ransom on her behalf? When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, he stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "O people! Why do you persist so much with me concerning one of the prescribed punishments (hudud) of Allah that has fallen upon one of the female servants of Allah? By the One in whose Hand is my soul! Even if Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, had committed the same crime that this woman has committed, I would have carried out this prescribed punishment upon her too."
