Muhammad bin Ishaq said: "Miqdad bin Amr bin Tha'labah bin Rabi'ah bin Thumamah bin Matrud bin Amr bin Sa'd bin Zuhayr bin Thawr bin Tha'labah bin Malik bin al-Sharid bin Hazl bin Qabis bin Duraym bin al-Qayn bin Ahwad bin Bahra' bin Amr bin al-Haf bin Quda'ah. He was attributed to al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth bin Wahb bin Abd Manaf bin Zuhrah because al-Aswad adopted him and made a pact of alliance with him. He was of brown complexion and heavily built, dyed his beard yellow, and had a high-bridged, long nose. He died in Madinah at the age of seventy, and Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with them both) led his funeral prayer."

Abu Rashid al-Hubrani said: I saw Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) - the horseman (cavalry fighter) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) - sitting in Hims on one of the money-changers' chests, while his body was much bulkier than it, and he wanted to go out on a military expedition. I said: Allah Almighty has already excused you. He said: "Surat al-Bu'uth (that is, Surah al-Tawbah) has refused us (staying behind): 'Go forth, whether light or heavy' [al-Tawbah: 41]."

Sufyan bin Sahbanah al-Mahri said: "I was a companion of Miqdad bin al-Aswad in the Jahiliyyah. He was a man of the tribe of Bahra'. He shed someone's blood among his people, so he fled to Kindah and made a pact of alliance with them. Then he shed someone's blood among them as well, so he fled to Makkah and made a pact of alliance with al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth."

Al-Sha'bi relates "that Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) borrowed seven thousand from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him). When he asked him to repay it, Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is only four thousand. So they took the matter to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I lent him seven thousand. And Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Will you swear that it is seven thousand? (Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: You have spoken fairly. But Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) refused to swear, so Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Take whatever he gives you. Then he said: By Allah, besides whom there is no true god, it is indeed seven thousand. He said: Then what prevents you from swearing, when this night and this day (are witnesses)?"
