Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that he passed by Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was standing at his door, gesturing with his hand as though talking to himself. Abdullah asked him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, what is the matter with you, that you are talking to yourself?" He said: "What is the matter with me? The enemy of Allah (Satan) wants to turn me away from what I heard from Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He says to me: 'You are now spending your days in hardship in your house and you do not go out to the gatherings!' (I said to him:) I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever strives in jihad in the path of Allah is under the guarantee of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; whoever visits a sick person is under the guarantee of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; whoever goes to the mosque in the morning or the evening is under the guarantee of Allah; and whoever sits in his house and does not backbite anyone with evil is under the guarantee of Allah.' So the enemy of Allah wants to bring me out of my house to the gatherings."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are five deeds; whoever does even one of them is under the guarantee of Allah: whoever visits a sick person, or goes out with a funeral, or goes out for jihad, or goes to his ruler intending to honour and revere him, or stays in his house in such a way that people are safe from him and he is safe from people."

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us with his colour changed, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am Muhammad. I have been given the openings and the conclusions of speech (its comprehensive expressions). Obey me as long as I am among you, and when I am taken away, hold fast to the Book of Allah: regard as lawful what it makes lawful and regard as unlawful what it makes unlawful. Death will come to you; it will come to you with rest and relief; this is a decree from Allah written beforehand. Trials will come to you like portions of the dark night. Whenever one messenger went, another messenger came; then prophethood passed on from one to another until it became kingship. May Allah have mercy on the one who takes it with its right and leaves it just as he entered it. O Mu'adh, hold on and keep count." The narrator said: When I reached five, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yazid; may Allah not bless Yazid." Then tears flowed from his (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been informed of the death of Husayn, and I have been brought the soil of his grave, and I have been told about his killer. By the One in whose hand is my soul, he will not be killed among a people who do not defend him except that Allah will put discord between their breasts and their hearts, set the worst of them over them, and divide them into factions." Then he said: "Alas for the young ones of the family of Muhammad at the hands of a caliph who will be appointed later, a man of luxury, who will kill those who come after me and those who come after them. O Mu'adh, hold on." When I reached ten, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Al-Walid, the name of Pharaoh, the destroyer of the laws of Islam. Before him will be a man from his own family. Allah will draw His sword and it will have no sheath, and the people will differ and become like this" - and he (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his fingers - then he said: "After one hundred and twenty years there will be swift death and widespread killing, and in it will be their destruction, and a man from the descendants of al-Abbas will rule over them." (The wording of both narrators is the same.)

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people mentioned a man in his (peace and blessings be upon him) presence and said: "How weak he is!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have backbitten your brother." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we only said what is in him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had said what is not in him, you would have slandered him."
