حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الصَّبَّاحِ الرَّقِّيُّ، ثنا وَضَّاحُ بْنُ يَحْيَى النَّهْشَلِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ كُلَيْبِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ: جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَأَخَذَ بِخِطَامِ نَاقَةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ " دُلَّنِي عَلَى عَمَلٍ يُقَرِّبُنِي مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَيُبَاعِدُنِي مِنَ النَّارِ، قَالَ: «لَقَدْ أَوْجَزْتَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ وَلَقَدْ أَعْرَضْتَ، تَعْبُدُ اللهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا، وَتُصَلِّي الْخَمْسَ، وَتَصُومُ رَمَضَانَ، وَمَا كَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُ النَّاسُ إِلَيْكَ فَاكْرَهَهُ لَهُمْ»
Sayyiduna Ma'n bin Yazid al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A Bedouin came and took hold of the nose-rein of the she-camel of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Prophet of Allah! Tell me of a deed that will bring me near to Paradise and keep me far from the Fire. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have been brief in your question, and yet you have asked about something vast: worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, pray the five prayers, fast Ramadan, and whatever you would dislike people doing to you, dislike doing it to them."
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ نَجْدَةَ الْحَوْطِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الذَّهَبِيُّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الضَّبِّيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَجَاءَ، قَالَا: ثنا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ السُّلَمِيِّ، قَالَ: بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَا، وَأَبِي، وَجَدِّي، وَخَطَبَ عَلِيَّ فَأَنْكَحَنِي، وَخَاصَمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَفَلَجَنِي، وَكَانَ أَبِي جَاءَ بِدِينَارَيْنِ يَتَصَدَّقُ بِهِمَا فَوَضَعَهُمَا عِنْدَ رَجُلٍ فَأَخَذْتُهُمَا فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهِمَا، فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ مَا إِيَّاكَ أَرَدْتُ، فَخَاصَمْتُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: «لَكَ مَا نَوَيْتَ يَا يَزِيدُ، وَلَكَ يَا مَعْنُ مَا أَخَذْتَ»
Sayyiduna Ma'n bin Yazid al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I, my father and my grandfather gave the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) made the proposal on my behalf and arranged my marriage, and I brought a dispute before him (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled in my favour. My father Yazid had brought two dinars to give in charity, and he placed them with a man; I took them and brought them to my father. He said: By Allah! It was not you I intended to give them to. So I brought the matter before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Yazid! You will have what you intended, and O Ma'n! You may keep what you have taken."
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، ثنا أَبِي، عَنْ جَدِّي، عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ: «خَاصَمْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَفْلَجَنِي، وَخَطَبَ عَلِيَّ فَأَنْكَحَنِي، وَبَايَعْتُهُ أَنَا وَجَدِّي»
Sayyiduna Ma'n bin Yazid al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I brought a dispute before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled in my favour; he (peace and blessings be upon him) made the marriage proposal on my behalf and arranged my marriage; and I and my grandfather gave the pledge of allegiance to him (peace and blessings be upon him).
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ، ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ: «بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَا وَجَدِّي، وَخَاصَمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَأَفْلَجَنِي، وَخَطَبَ عَلِيَّ فَأَنْكَحَنِي» ، فَقَالَ مَعْنٌ: «لَا تَحِلُّ غَنِيمَةٌ حَتَّى تُقْسَمَ، وَلَا تُقْبَلُ مِنْهَا حَتَّى تُقْسَمَ لِلنَّاسِ»
Sayyiduna Ma'n bin Yazid al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I and my grandfather gave the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); I brought a dispute before him (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled in my favour; and he (peace and blessings be upon him) made the marriage proposal on my behalf and arranged my marriage. Sayyiduna Ma'n (may Allah be pleased with him) further said: The spoils of war are not lawful until they are distributed, and it is not permissible to take anything from them until they are distributed among the people.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا عَفَّانُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا فَهِدُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ أَبُو رَبِيعَةَ، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ الْجَرْمِيِّ، قَالَ: كُنَّا بِأَرْضِ الرُّومِ فَأُمِّرَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَعْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ السُّلَمِيُّ، قَالَ: فَأَصَبْتُ جَرَّةً حَمْرَاءَ فِيهَا دَنَانِيرٌ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا فَخَمَّسَهَا، وَقَالَ: لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «لَا نَفْلَ إِلَّا مِنَ الْخُمُسِ» لَأَعْطَيْتُكَ، قَالَ: فَعَرَضَ عَلِيَّ مِنْ نَصِيبِهِ، فَقُلْتُ: لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهِ
Abu al-Juwayriyah al-Jarmi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: We were in the land of the Romans, and a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from Banu Sulaym, called Ma'n bin Yazid al-Sulami, was appointed as our commander. Abu al-Juwayriyah said: I found a red jar containing dinars, and I brought it to him. He took out a fifth of it and said: Had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no extra reward (nafl) except from the fifth (khumus)," I would have given it all to you. The narrator said: Then he offered me something from his own share, but I said: I have no need of it.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ أَبِي رِزْمَةَ، أنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو حَمْزَةَ السُّكَّرِيُّ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ، حَدَّثَنِي سُهَيْلُ بْنُ ذِرَاعٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مَعْنَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «اجْتَمِعُوا فِي مَسَاجِدِكُمْ، فَإِذَا اجْتَمَعَ قَوْمٌ فَلْيُؤْذِنُونِي» ، فَاجْتَمَعْنَا أَوَّلَ النَّاسِ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ فَآذَنَّاهُ، فَجَاءَ يَمْشِي مَعَنَا حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَيْنَا، قَالَ: فَتَكَلَّمَ مُتَكَلِّمٌ مِنَّا، فَقَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي لَيْسَ لِلْحَمْدِ دُونَهُ مَقْصَرٌ، وَلَيْسَ وَرَاءَهُ مَنْفَذٌ، أَوْ نَحْوَ هَذَا، قَالَ: فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَامَ، وَتَلَاوَمْنَا وَلَامَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا، وَقُلْنَا: خَصَّنَا اللهُ بِهِ أَنْ أَتَانَا أَوَّلَ النَّاسِ وَإِنْ فَعَلَ وَفَعَلَ، وَأَتَيْنَاهُ فَوَجَدْنَاهُ فِي مَسْجِدِ بَنِي فُلَانٍ فَكَلَّمْنَاهُ، فَأَقْبَلَ مَعَنَا حَتَّى جَلَسَ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ الَّذِي كَانَ فِيهِ أَوْ قَرِيبٍ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ لِلَّهِ مَا شَاءَ جَعَلَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَمَا شَاءَ جَعَلَ خَلْفَهُ، وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبَيَانِ سِحْرًا» ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَكَلَّمَنَا وَأَمَرَنَا وَعَلَّمَنَا
Sayyiduna Ma'n bin Yazid al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gather in your mosques, and when people have gathered, inform me." We were the first of the people to gather, and we came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came walking with us until he sat among us. The narrator said: Then a speaker among us spoke and said: All praise belongs to Allah, beyond whom praise has no limit and behind whom there is no passage, or words to that effect. The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and stood up. Then we began to blame one another, and we said: Allah honoured us in that he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us first of all the people, and then such and such happened. So we went to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and found him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque of such-and-such a tribe. We spoke to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) came with us until he sat in the same place where he had sat before, or near it. Then he said: "Indeed, all praise belongs to Allah; whatever He wills He places before Him and whatever He wills He places behind Him. And indeed some eloquence has the effect of magic." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to us, spoke with us, gave us commands and taught us.
