حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ الْجُمَحِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ بَكَّارَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ وَاسِعٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: مَا وَلَدَتْ قُرَشِيَّةٌ لِقُرَشِيٍّ خَيْرًا لَهَا فِي دِينِهَا مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَمَا وَلَدَتْ قُرَشِيَّةٌ لِقُرَشِيٍّ خَيْرًا لَهَا فِي دُنْيَاهَا مِنِّي، فَقَالَ مَعْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ السُّلَمِيُّ: " مَا وَلَدَتْ قُرَشِيَّةٌ لِقُرَشِيٍّ خَيْرًا لَهَا فِي دِينِهَا مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَمَا وَلَدَتْ قُرَشِيَّةٌ لِقُرَشِيٍّ شَرًّا لَهَا فِي دُنْيَاهَا مِنْكَ، قَالَ: وَلِمَ؟، قَالَ: لِأَنَّكَ عَوَّدْتَهُمْ عَادَةً كَأَنِّي بِهِمْ قَدْ طَلَبُوهَا مِنْ غَيْرِكَ، فَتَأْتِي بِهِمْ صَرْعَى فِي الطُّرُقِ، فَقَالَ: وَيْحَكَ وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأُكَاتِمُهَا نَفْسِي مُنْذُ كَذَا وَكَذَا
Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No Qurashi woman has borne to a Qurashi man a child better for her in terms of religion than Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and no Qurashi woman has borne to a Qurashi man a child better for her in terms of this world than me. At this Ma'n bin Yazid al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No Qurashi woman has borne to a Qurashi man a child better for her in terms of religion than Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), but no Qurashi woman has borne to a Qurashi man a child worse for her in terms of this world than you. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why? He said: Because you have accustomed them to a habit such that it is as if I can see them seeking it from someone other than you, and you will find them lying fallen in the roads. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Woe to you! By Allah, I have been hiding this within my own heart for so long.
