Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were sitting in the mosque when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and said: "You say that I will be the last of you to die, whereas I will be the first of you to die, and you will follow me in successive groups," meaning one after another. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Say: He is able to send upon you a punishment from above you or from beneath your feet" [Al-An'am: 65], until he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "For every news there is an appointed time, and soon you will come to know" [Al-An'am: 67]. Then he said: "A band from my Ummah will always continue to fight upon the truth, dominant, not caring about those who forsake them or those who oppose them, until the command of Allah comes while they are in that state." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "O Isa! I will take you in full, raise you to Myself, purify you from those who disbelieve, and make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection" [Al Imran: 55].
