Sayyiduna Malik bin Abdullah al-Ghafiqi (may Allah be pleased with him) related that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ate some food, then said: "Screen me until I take a ritual bath (ghusl)." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Were you in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." I told this to Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: This man claims that you ate while in a state of janabah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. When I have performed ablution (wudu), I eat and drink, but I do not pray or recite until I have taken a ritual bath."

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ghafiqi (Malik bin Abdullah) (may Allah be pleased with him) said that he heard Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: This companion of yours is one who retains (what he heard) and is mortal. The last instruction the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us was that he said: "Whoever has retained anything from me, let him narrate it; and whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire."

Wada'ah al-Hamdi (may Allah have mercy on him) related that he was at the side of Sayyiduna Malik bin Abdullah al-Ghafiqi (may Allah be pleased with him) while Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) was relating narratives, and Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This companion of yours is heedless and mortal. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us this instruction at the Farewell Pilgrimage: "Hold fast to the Qur'an, for you will soon return to people who long to hear hadith from me. So whoever has understood something, let him narrate it; and whoever fabricates lies about me, let him take his seat - or he said: a portion - in Hell." The narrator said: I do not remember which of the two he said.
