The grandsons of Sayyiduna Malik bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate that their grandfather Malik bin Umayr was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the Conquest of Makkah, Khaybar and al-Ta'if. He was a poet, and he said: O Messenger of Allah! Give me a ruling about poetry. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That the space between your chest and your shoulder be filled with pus is better than that it be filled with poetry." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Pass your hand over my head. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on my head, and after that I never composed a single verse of poetry. And Malik lived so long that the hair of his head and beard turned white, but the place of the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not turn white.
