Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said concerning this verse: "Then a ransom of fasting, or charity, or a sacrifice" [Surah al-Baqarah: 196]: I was carried to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while lice were falling over my face, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did not think that the affliction had reached with you the extent that I see. Do you have a sheep?" I said: "No." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then fast three days, or feed such-and-such a number of poor people, half a sa' of wheat for each poor person."

Abdullah bin Ma'qil (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We were sitting in the mosque when Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sat with us and said: "This verse was revealed concerning me: 'And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head, then a ransom of fasting, or charity, or a sacrifice' [Surah al-Baqarah: 196]." I asked: "What was your situation?" He said: "We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the state of ihram, and lice got into my head, my beard and my moustache, until they even got into my eyebrows. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I did not think that it had reached this extent with you. Call the barber.' So the barber was called and he shaved my head. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do you have a sacrificial animal?' I said: 'No.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Then fast three days, or feed six poor people, one sa' between every two poor people.' So the verse was revealed concerning me specifically and for people in general."

It is narrated about Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the state of ihram, and lice got into his head and beard. This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent someone to him and called the barber, who shaved his head. Then he said: "Do you have a sacrificial animal?" He said: "I cannot afford it." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to fast three days or feed six poor people, one sa' for each poor person. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse specifically concerning him: "And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head, then a ransom of fasting, or charity, or a sacrifice" [Surah al-Baqarah: 196]; then this ruling became general for all Muslims.

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I entered ihram from al-Hudaybiyah while I had thick hair on my head, and lice got into it and nits (lice eggs) clung to it as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me and said: "Shave it, shave it." So I shaved my head. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have a hady (sacrificial animal)?" I said: "I do not have one." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is easily available." I said: "I do not have one." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then fast three days, or feed six poor people half a sa' of wheat each." He said: It was concerning me that this verse was revealed: "And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head" [Surah al-Baqarah: 196].
