Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We set out on the Hajj journey in which we gave the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Aqabah, together with the polytheists of our people, and with us was al-Bara' bin Ma'rur, our elder and our chief. When we reached the open plain of al-Bayda', he said: O people! You know that I have formed an opinion, and I do not know whether you will agree with me on it or not. We asked: O Abu al-Bishr! What is it? He said: My opinion is that I should pray towards this building (the Ka'bah) and not put it behind me. We said: No, by Allah, do not do that; all we know is that our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prays facing only towards Syria. He said: By Allah, I will pray towards this very Ka'bah. So whenever the time of prayer came, he would face the Ka'bah and we would face Syria, until we reached Makkah. Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur said to me: O my nephew! Come, take us to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so that we may ask him about the ruling on what we did on this journey, for because of your opposing me, I have felt some unease in my heart about it. So we went out to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and in al-Abtah we met a man. We said to him: Can you direct us to Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib? He said: Would the two of you recognise him if you saw him? We said: No, by Allah, we do not recognise him, for we had never seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) before. He said: Then do you know al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib? We said: Yes, we know him; he used to come and go among us for trade. He said: Then when you enter the Mosque, look for al-Abbas; he is the man with whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will be. So we entered the Mosque, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) were sitting in a corner of the Mosque. We greeted them with salam and sat down, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know these two men?" When he turned towards them, he said: Yes, this is al-Bara' bin Ma'rur, the chief of his people, and this is Ka'b bin Malik. By Allah, I never forget these words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "The poet?" He said: Yes. Then al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! I formed an opinion on this journey of mine, and I would like to ask you about it so that you may tell me the ruling on what I did. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is it?" He said: My opinion was that I should not put this building (the Ka'bah) behind me, so I prayed facing it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You were on a qiblah; had you remained steadfast upon it, it would have been better." So he returned to the qiblah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). His family used to say that he died upon that (the qiblah of the Ka'bah), but we knew him better: he had returned to the qiblah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and prayed with us towards Syria.
Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us an appointment for the middle day of the Days of Tashriq. We were seventy men for the pledge of allegiance to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and with us was Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram, Abu Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who was still upon his polytheism. We said to him: O Abu Jabir! By Allah, we dislike that you should die in the state you are in and become fuel for this Fire tomorrow. Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has sent a Messenger who commands His Oneness (tawhid), some people of your tribe have already accepted Islam, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given us an appointment for the pledge. So he accepted Islam, purified his clothes and attended the pledge with us, and he also became a naqib (representative). When the night came for which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had given us an appointment at Mina, we spent the first part of the night with our people. Then, when the people were fast asleep, we slipped away from our beds stealthily, as the qata (a sand grouse-like bird) slips away, until we gathered at al-Aqabah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, and there was no one with him (peace and blessings be upon him) except his uncle al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who was still upon his polytheism, but he wanted to be present at the affair of his nephew. He was the first to speak. He said: O assembly of al-Khazraj - the Arabs used to call this tribe of the Ansar, whether Aws or Khazraj, al-Khazraj - O assembly of al-Khazraj! Muhammad is one of us, as you know. He is protected among his people and in his city, and we have protected him even from those who held the same view of him as we do, but he has refused, and insists on going over to you and to that to which you have invited him. So if you think that you will fulfil the promise you have made to him, then you and your affair. But if you fear that you yourselves will abandon him, then leave him among his people, for he is protected among his clan and his people. We said: We have heard what you said. O Messenger of Allah! Now you speak. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke; he called to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, recited the Qur'an and encouraged us towards Islam. We responded to him (peace and blessings be upon him) in believing in him and affirming him, and we said: O Messenger of Allah! Take whatever covenant you wish, first for your Lord and then for yourself. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I take your pledge that you will protect me as you protect your sons and your women." Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) answered and said: Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth! So we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, we are people of war and of weapons; we have inherited this generation after generation. During this, Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan (may Allah be pleased with him) joined the conversation and said: O Messenger of Allah! Between us and a certain people (the Jews) there are ties of friendship, and we are going to cut them. Might it be that, if Allah grants you victory, you will return to your people and leave us? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, blood is blood and destruction is destruction. I am of you and you are of me. I will make peace with whoever you make peace with, and I will fight whoever you fight." Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Stretch out your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring out to me twelve representatives from among you." So they appointed twelve representatives: the representative of Banu al-Najjar was As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him); the representatives of Banu Salimah were al-Bara' bin Ma'rur and Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram (may Allah be pleased with them both); the representatives of Banu Sa'idah were Sa'd bin Ubadah and al-Mundhir bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both); the representative of Banu Zurayq was Rafi' bin Malik bin al-Ajlan (may Allah be pleased with him); the representatives of Banu al-Harith bin al-Khazraj were Abdullah bin Rawahah and Sa'd bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with them both); the representative of Banu Awf bin al-Khazraj was Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him); the representatives of Banu Abd al-Ashhal were Usayd bin Hudayr and Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan (may Allah be pleased with them both); and the representative of Banu Amr bin Awf was Sa'd bin Khaythamah (may Allah be pleased with him). They were twelve men in all, nine from al-Khazraj and three from al-Aws. Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) took the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and struck his hand upon it in pledge; he was the first to pledge allegiance, and then the people came one after another and pledged allegiance. Satan screamed upon al-Aqabah in the loudest voice I have ever heard, saying: O people of al-Hubahib (the encampments of Mina)! Have you any news of Muhammad and the renegades with him, who have gathered to make war on you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Disperse to your encampments." So we went back to our encampments and lay down on our beds. When morning came, some of the chiefs of Quraysh came, among them al-Harith bin Hisham, a young man wearing new sandals, until they came to us in our encampments and said: O assembly of al-Khazraj! You have come to take our companion out from among us. By Allah, there is no people among the Arabs more hateful to us than you, should war break out between us and him because of you. Some of the polytheists of our people stood up and began swearing by Allah that nothing of the sort had happened and that we had not done it. I was looking at Abu Jabir bin Abdullah bin Haram (may Allah be pleased with him); he was silent and I was silent. When those people got up to leave, I said something, as if I too were joining in their talk: O Abu Jabir! You are one of our chiefs and one of our elders; can you not even have sandals made like the sandals of this young Qurayshi? The young man heard this, took off both his sandals and threw them at me, and said: By Allah, you will wear them. Abu Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Wait! By Allah, you have angered the man - meaning, you have embarrassed him - give him back his sandals. I said: By Allah, I will not give them back; I hope that (one day) I will strip him of his belongings.
