Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 16226 — When my father Ka'b lost his sight, I

Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When my father Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) lost his sight, I used to guide him. Whenever I took him out for the Friday prayer and he heard the call to prayer (adhan) for Friday, he would seek forgiveness for Abu Umamah As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him). For some time I kept hearing him seek this forgiveness, and I said to myself: Even if I can do nothing else, I will at least ask him about this. So I took him out as I usually did, and when he heard the Friday adhan he sought forgiveness for As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked: O my father! Whenever you hear the Friday adhan, you seek forgiveness for As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him); what is the reason for this? He said: O my son! Before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, As'ad (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first person to gather us in Madinah for the Friday prayer, in a hollow of the stony ground of Banu Bayadah, at Naqi' al-Khadamat. I asked: How many were you that day? He said: Forty men.
