حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ زِبْرِيقَ الْحِمْصِيُّ، ثنا أَصْبَغُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَبَانَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ: كَانَ إِسْلَامُ قَبَاثِ بْنِ أَشْيَمَ اللَّيْثِيُّ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ قَوْمِهِ وَغَيْرِهِمْ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ أَتَوْهُ، فَقَالُوا: إِنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَدْ خَرَجَ يَدْعُو إِلَى دَيْنٍ غَيْرِ دِينِنَا، فَقَامَ قَبَاثٌ حَتَّى أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ لَهُ: «اجْلِسْ يَا قَبَاثُ» ، فَأَوْهَمَ قَبَاثٌ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَنْتَ الْقَائِلُ: لَوْ خَرَجَتْ نِسَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ بِأَكِمَّتِهَا رَدَّتْ مُحَمَّدًا وَأَصْحَابَهُ "، فَقَالَ قَبَاثٌ: وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ، مَا تَحَرَّكَ بِهِ لِسَانِي، وَلَا تَرَمْرَمَتْ بِهِ شَفَتَايَ، وَلَا سَمِعَهُ مِنِّي أَحَدٌ، وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا شَيْءٌ هَجَسَ فِي نَفْسِي، أَشْهَدُ أَلَّا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ، قَالَ: «وَإِنَّ مَا جِئْتَ بِهِ حَقٌّ»
Sulayman said: The cause of the Islam of Qubath bin Ashyam al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) was that some people from his tribe and from other Arab tribes came to him and said: "Muhammad bin Abd al-Muttalib has come out calling to a religion different from our religion." So Qubath (may Allah be pleased with him) got up and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he entered upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Sit down, O Qubath!" Qubath was startled, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Are you the one who said: If the women of Quraysh had come out with their sleeves, they would have driven back Muhammad and his companions?" Qubath said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, my tongue never moved with it, nor did my lips utter it, nor did anyone hear it from me; it was only a thought that occurred in my heart. I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah." (And) he said: "And indeed what you have brought is the truth."
حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ سَيْفٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ قَبَاثِ بْنِ أَشْيَمَ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: «صَلَاةُ الرَّجُلَيْنِ يَؤُمُّ أَحَدُهُمَا صَاحِبَهُ أَزْكَى عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ أَرْبَعَةٍ تَتْرَى، وَصَلَاةُ أَرْبَعَةٍ يَؤُمُّهُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ أَزْكَى عِنْدُ اللهَ مِنْ صَلَاةِ ثَمَانِيَةٍ تَتْرَى، وَصَلَاةُ ثَمَانِيَةٍ يَؤُمُّهُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ أَزْكَى عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ مِائَةٍ تَتْرَى»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qubath bin Ashyam al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer of two men, in which one leads the other, is purer in the sight of Allah than the separate prayer of four men; and the prayer of four men, in which one of them leads them, is purer in the sight of Allah than the separate prayer of eight men; and the prayer of eight men, in which one of them leads them, is purer in the sight of Allah than the separate prayer of a hundred men."
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ هَارُونَ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ رَاهَوَيْهِ، ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، عَنْ ثَوْرِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ سَيْفٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ قَبَاثِ بْنِ أَشْيَمَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: «صَلَاةُ الرَّجُلَيْنِ يَؤُمُّ أَحَدُهُمَا صَاحِبَهُ أَزْكَى عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ أَرْبَعَةٍ تَتْرَى، وَصَلَاةُ أَرْبَعَةٍ يَؤُمُّهُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ أَزْكَى عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ ثَمَانِيَةٍ تَتْرَى، وَصَلَاةُ ثَمَانِيَةٍ يَؤُمُّهُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ أَزْكَى عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ مِائَةٍ تَتْرَى» . قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ رَاهَوَيْهِ: «قَدْ أَدْرَكَ قَبَاثٌ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ»

Ishaq bin Rahawayh said: Qubath (may Allah be pleased with him) lived in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ الْحِزَامِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ أَبِي الْحُوَيْرِثِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ، يَقُولُ لِقَبَاثِ بْنِ أَشْيَمَ اللَّيْثِيِّ: يَا قَبَاثُ أَنْتَ أَكْبَرُ أَمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟، فَقَالَ: «رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَكْبَرُ مِنِّي، وَأَنَا أَسَنُّ مِنْهُ، وُلِدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَامَ الْفِيلِ، وَتَنَبَّأَ عَلَى رَأْسِ أَرْبَعِينَ مِنَ الْفِيلِ»
Abu al-Huwayrith said: I heard Abd al-Malik bin Marwan say to Sayyiduna Qubath bin Ashyam al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Qubath! Are you greater (akbar), or the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is greater than me, and I am older than him in age. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was born in the Year of the Elephant, and he was honoured with prophethood forty years after the Year of the Elephant."
