حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عَلْقَمَةَ، أَنَّ غَرْفَةَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ - وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ وَقَاتَلَ مَعَ عِكْرِمَةَ بْنِ أَبِي جَهْلٍ بِالْيَمَنِ فِي الرِّدَّةِ - أَنَّهُ مَرَّ نَصْرَانِيٌّ مِنْ أَهْلِ مِصْرَ يُقَالُ لَهُ الْمَنْدَقُونُ، فَدَعَاهُ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، فَذَكَرَ النَّصْرَانِيُّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتَنَاوَلَهُ، فَرَفَعَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: قَدْ أَعْطَيْنَاهُ الْعَهْدَ، فَقَالَ غَرْفَةُ: «مُعَاذَ اللهِ أَنْ نَكُونَ أَعْطَيْنَاهُمُ الْعُهُودَ وَالْمَوَاثِيقَ عَلَى أَنْ يُؤْذُونَا فِي اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، إِنَّمَا أَعْطَيْنَاهُمْ عَلَى أَنْ نَحِلَّ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ كَنَائِسِهِمْ، يَقُولُونَ فِيهَا مَا بَدَا لَهُمْ، وَأَنْ لَا نُحَمِّلَهُمْ مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَهُمْ بِهِ، وَأَنْ نُقَاتِلَ مِنْ وَرَائِهِمْ، وَأَنْ يُخَلَّى بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ أَحْكَامِهِمْ إِلَّا أَنْ يَأْتُوا فَنَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ» ، فَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ: صَدَقْتَ
Sayyiduna Ghurfah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), who had companionship (with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) and who fought alongside Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl (may Allah be pleased with him) in Yemen during (the trial of) apostasy (al-riddah): a Christian from the people of Egypt called al-Manduqun passed by him, and he invited him to Islam. The Christian mentioned the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and insulted him. This was reported to Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), who sent for Sayyiduna Ghurfah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "We have given them a covenant." At this Sayyiduna Ghurfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Allah forbid that we gave them covenants and pledges on the condition that they may harm us concerning Allah and His Messenger! We only gave them a covenant that we would not come between them and their churches, where they may say whatever they wish; that we would not burden them with what they cannot bear; that we would fight (the enemy) on their behalf; and that they would be left free in their own judgements, unless they themselves come (to us), in which case we would judge between them according to what Allah has revealed." Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have spoken the truth."
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ الْبَغَوِيُّ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَبَّانَ النَّصْرِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ حَرْمَلَةَ بْنِ عِمْرَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْأَزْدِيِّ، عَنْ غَرْفَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ: شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ، وَأَتَى بِالْبُدْنِ فَقَالَ: «ادْعُوا لِي أَبَا حَسَنٍ» فَدَعَا عَلِيًّا فَقَالَ: «خُذْ بِأَسْفَلِ الْحَرْبَةِ» وَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِأَعْلَاهَا، فَقَطَعْنَا بِهَا الْبُدْنَ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ، رَكِبَ الْبَغْلَةَ فَأَرْدَفَ عَلِيًّا
Sayyiduna Ghurfah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) related: I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the Farewell Hajj. The sacrificial camels were brought, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call Abu al-Hasan to me." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was called, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Take hold of the lower part of the spear." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the upper part, and we slaughtered the camels with it. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished, he mounted the mule and seated Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him.
