Sayyiduna al-Irbad bin Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us an admonition from which the eyes shed tears and the hearts became fearful. We said: "O Messenger of Allah, this seems like the admonition of one bidding farewell, so advise us." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I advise you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey, even if (the ruler) is an Abyssinian slave. For whoever among you lives after me will see much disagreement. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs (al-Khulafa' al-Rashidun) after me; bite onto it with your molar teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for every innovation (bid'ah) is misguidance."

Sayyiduna al-Irbad bin Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one day after the morning prayer the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them an admonition from which the eyes shed tears and the hearts became fearful. A Companion said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is the admonition of one bidding farewell, so what covenant do you take from us?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I advise you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey, even if he is an Abyssinian slave. For whoever among you lives after me will see much disagreement. So beware of newly invented matters, for they are misguidance; and hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me; bite onto it with your molar teeth."

We said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is the admonition of one bidding farewell, so what covenant do you take from us?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have left you upon a white (shining) path whose night is like its day; none will deviate from it after me except one who is destroyed. Whoever among you lives will see much disagreement. So hold fast to what you know of my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs, and hold fast to obedience, even if he is an Abyssinian slave; bite onto it with your molar teeth. Indeed, the believer is like a camel with a ring in its nose: wherever it is led, it follows."

Sayyiduna al-Irbad bin Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Fajr prayer, and then he narrated a similar hadith.

Irbad (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man of the tribe of Banu Sulaym. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and admonished the people, encouraged them and warned them, and said what Allah willed, and he said: "Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him; obey the one whom Allah has made ruler over your affairs; and do not dispute with the one to whom this matter (of rule) has been entrusted, even if he is a black slave. Hold fast to what you know of the Sunnah of your Prophet and of the rightly guided caliphs, and bite onto it with your molar teeth."
