Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the funeral prayer of a man from the Ansar, and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "O Allah, send Your mercy upon him and forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon him, make his hospitality and his final abode honourable, wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt; and give him a home better than his home and a family better than his family; and protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire." Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I saw myself in my dream wishing that I were that deceased person in place of that Ansari, when I saw this prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

The narrator relates that Habib bin Maslamah brought a man who had committed treachery with the spoils of war (ghulul). He tied him up at the side of the mosque and ordered that his belongings be burned. Then, when he had finished the prayer, he stood among the people, praised and extolled Allah, and mentioned treachery with the spoils and what Allah had revealed concerning it. Then Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O people, beware of sins for which there is no expiation; for a man who consumes usury (riba), if he repents, Allah accepts his repentance. And Allah Almighty says: "It is not for any prophet to act treacherously, and whoever acts treacherously will come with what he took treacherously on the Day of Resurrection" [Al Imran: 161]. And indeed Allah will raise the one who consumes usury on the Day of Resurrection insane and choking.

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of the sins that are not forgiven: treachery with the spoils (ghulul), for whoever acts treacherously will come with it on the Day of Resurrection; and the consumer of usury (riba), for whoever consumes usury will be raised on the Day of Resurrection insane and staggering." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Those who consume usury will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except as one stands whom Satan has driven to madness by his touch" [Al-Baqarah: 275].
