Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in i'tikaf (seclusion in the mosque) during the last ten days of Ramadan. When it was the twenty-third night, he said: "Whoever wishes to stand in prayer with us tonight, let him stand in my place," until a third of the night had passed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went back. I walked with him (peace and blessings be upon him) as far as 'Qutaybah', and we said: O Messenger of Allah, would that you led us in prayer tonight! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is sufficient for a man that he prays with the imam until he finishes; then the standing of a whole night is recorded for him."
