Tamim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) when he arrived at a halting place where he was to stay. A Bedouin came to him and asked (for something). He said: "I have nothing with me to give you, but I have a coat of mail in Kufah; it is yours." The Bedouin disliked it (and became displeased), so he swore that he would not give him (anything). The Bedouin said: "I only came to you so that you would help me (in obtaining) a servant." He said: "I have already ordered my coat of mail for you. By Allah, it is dearer to me than three slaves." At this, the Bedouin showed interest in it and said: "I accept your kindness." Sayyiduna Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him do what is better,' I would not have given it to you."

A man came (to Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him)) and asked for a hundred dirhams. He said: "You ask me for a hundred dirhams when I am the son of Hatim?! By Allah, I will not give you." Then he said: "Had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him do what is better,' I would not have given it to you."
