Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: When the polytheists returned from Badr to Makkah, and Allah Almighty had killed those of them whom He killed, Umayr bin Wahb came until he reached Safwan bin Umayyah in the Hijr. Safwan said: "May Allah make life wretched after those killed at Badr." Umayr said: "Yes, by Allah, there is no good in life any more. Were it not for a debt upon me which I find no means to repay, and my dependants behind me for whom I have nothing, I would go to Muhammad and kill him if I set eyes on him, for I have a pretext with them; I would say: 'I have come for this captive son of mine.'" Safwan was pleased with his words and said: "Your debt is upon me, and in maintenance your dependants will be equal to my dependants. How could it be that I have the means and we fail them?" So Safwan gave him a mount and equipped him, and armed him with Safwan's sword, which was polished and poisoned. Umayr said to Safwan: "Keep my affair hidden for a few nights." Then Umayr set out until he reached Madinah, dismounted at the door of the mosque, tied his camel and took the sword (to target) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him; he was with a group of the Ansar talking about the battle of Badr and giving thanks for the blessing of Allah. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Umayr bin Wahb with the sword, he was alarmed and said: "The dog has come to you! This is the enemy of Allah who stirred up (the fire of war) between us and estimated our numbers for the enemy." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) got up, went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "This is Umayr bin Wahb; he has entered the mosque carrying weapons. He is a wicked, treacherous man. O Messenger of Allah, do not trust him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him to me." So Sayyiduna Umar and Umayr entered, and (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) ordered his companions to go in to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and to be on guard against Umayr when he came in to them. So Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab and Umayr bin Wahb came before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Umar had his sword with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar: "Move back from him." When Umayr came near, he greeted him in the manner of the Age of Ignorance, saying "In'am sabahan" (Good morning). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has honoured us with a greeting better than yours, and has made our greeting 'al-Salam', and that is the greeting of the people of Paradise." Umayr said: "Your knowledge of it is quite recent." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has given us something better in its place. So, O Umayr, what has brought you here?" He said: "I have come concerning my captive who is with you; be lenient with me regarding him, for you are my kinsfolk and family." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then why is this sword on your neck?" Umayr said: "May Allah ruin these swords; they did not benefit us at all. I simply forgot that it was hanging on my neck when I dismounted. And by my life, I (too) have a sense of honour." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell me truthfully, what has brought you here?" He said: "I have come only for my captive." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what condition did you agree with Safwan bin Umayyah al-Jumahi in the Hijr?" Umayr was alarmed and said: "What condition did I agree with him?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You took it upon yourself, for him, that if you killed me he would support your children and pay off your debt, but Allah stands between you and that." Umayr said: "I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no true deity except Allah. O Messenger of Allah, we used to deny you regarding the revelation and the news that came to you from the heavens. This conversation that took place between me and Safwan in the Hijr is exactly as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has stated; no one knew of it except me and him, and then Allah informed you of it. So I believe in Allah and His Messenger, and all praise is for Allah who brought me to this place." The Muslims rejoiced greatly when Allah guided him. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When he (first) appeared, even a pig was dearer to me than he was, and today he is dearer to me than some of my own sons." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down; we will show you kindness," and he said: "Teach your brother the Qur'an," and he freed his captive for him. Umayr said: "O Messenger of Allah, I strove with all my might to extinguish the light of Allah, so all praise is for Allah who set me on this path. Now permit me to go to Quraysh and invite them to Islam; perhaps Allah will guide them and save them from destruction." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission, and he went to Makkah. Safwan began saying in the gatherings of Quraysh: "Rejoice at a victory that will make you forget the battle of Badr." And he kept asking every rider who came from Madinah whether anything new had happened there, hoping for what Umayr bin Wahb had said, until a man from the people of Madinah came to him. Safwan asked him, and he said: "He has become a Muslim." The polytheists met him and said: "He has abandoned his religion." Safwan said: "It is binding upon me never to benefit him with any spending and never to speak a word to him." Umayr came to them and invited them to Islam and counselled them sincerely, and many people became Muslims.

Muhammad bin Ja'far bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: A short while after the calamity that befell Quraysh at Badr, Umayr bin Wahb al-Jumahi sat with Safwan bin Umayyah in the Hijr. Umayr was one of those who used to harm the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions in Makkah, and the Companions suffered severe hardship from them. His son Wahb bin Umayr was among the captives of Badr. The narrator said: The two of them mentioned the slain of Quraysh who had been thrown into the well, and Safwan said: "By Allah, there is no good in life after them." Umayr bin Wahb said: "You have spoken the truth. By Allah, were it not for a debt upon me which I have no means to repay, and dependants whom I fear would be ruined after me, I would go to Muhammad myself and kill him. And I have a pretext for it: my son is a captive with them." Safwan seized the opportunity and said: "Your debt is upon me; I will pay it off for you. Your dependants will be with my dependants; as long as they live, they will receive nothing less than my dependants." Umayr said: "Keep my affair and yours hidden." Safwan said: "Very well." Then Umayr had his sword sharpened and poisoned, and set out for Madinah. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting in Madinah with some Muslims, recalling the day of Badr, the blessing of Allah upon them, and the victory over their enemy that Allah had shown them, when suddenly his eye fell on Umayr bin Wahb, who, with his sword slung on, was making his mount kneel at the door of the mosque. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This dog, the enemy of Allah, Umayr bin Wahb, has come for nothing but evil. He is the one who stirred up trouble between us on the day of Badr and estimated our numbers for the enemy." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, this enemy of Allah, Umayr bin Wahb, has come with his sword slung on." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him in." Sayyiduna Umar went forward until he seized the strap of his sword at his neck and led him along by it, and he said to some men of the Ansar who were with him: "Go in to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), sit near him and be on guard against this dog, for he is not to be trusted." Then he brought him in to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with Sayyiduna Umar holding the strap of his sword. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him go, O Umar. Come closer, O Umayr." He came closer and said: "An'imu sabahan" (Good morning), and this was the way they greeted one another in the Age of Ignorance. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has honoured us with a greeting better than yours, O Umayr: al-Salam, the greeting of the people of Paradise." He said: "By Allah, O Muhammad, you have only recently come to know this greeting." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has brought you here?" He said: "I have come for this captive who is with you; treat him well." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then why is this sword on your neck?" He said: "May Allah ruin these swords; did they benefit us at all?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell me the truth, what have you come for?" He said: "I have come only for this." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, you and Safwan bin Umayyah sat in the Hijr and mentioned the slain of Quraysh thrown into the well of Badr, and you said: 'Were it not for my debt and the responsibility of my dependants, I would go out myself and kill Muhammad.' So Safwan took on your debt and the responsibility of your dependants on condition that you kill me, but Allah stands between you and that." Umayr said: "I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah. O Messenger of Allah, we used to deny you regarding the news of the heavens and the revelation, yet this was a matter at which no one was present except me and Safwan. By Allah, I know that no one but Allah informed you of it. So all praise is for Allah who guided me to Islam and set me on this path." Then he bore the testimony of truth. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give your brother understanding of his religion, teach him to recite the Qur'an, and free his captive for him." Then Umayr said: "O Messenger of Allah, I strove hard to extinguish the light of Allah and was severe in harming those who followed the religion of Allah. I would like you to permit me to go to Makkah and call them to Allah and to Islam; perhaps Allah will guide them. Otherwise, I will harm them just as I used to harm your companions over their religion." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission, and he went to Makkah. When Umayr bin Wahb had set out, Safwan began saying to Quraysh: "Rejoice at an event that is about to come to you and will make you forget the battle of Badr." And he kept asking riders about him, until a rider came and told him that he had embraced Islam. So he swore that he would never speak to him and never benefit him in any way. When Umayr reached Makkah, he stayed there calling people to Islam and severely harming whoever opposed him, and many people became Muslims at his hands.

Imam Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: When the polytheists returned to Makkah, and Allah Almighty had killed those of them whom He willed, Umayr bin Wahb al-Jumahi came and sat with Safwan bin Umayyah in the Hijr. (Safwan) said: "May Allah ruin life after those killed at Badr." Umayr said: "Yes, by Allah, there is no good in life after them. Were it not for a debt upon me which I have no means to repay, and dependants for whom I can leave nothing, I would go to Muhammad myself and kill him if I set eyes on him. I also have a pretext which I can use: I will say that I have come to my captive son." Safwan was pleased on hearing his words and said: "Your debt is upon me, and in maintenance your dependants will be like my dependants; nothing will be too much for me, nor will I be unable to manage it." So Safwan gave him a mount and equipped him, and had Umayr's sword polished and poisoned. Umayr said to Safwan: "Keep my affair hidden for a few days." So Umayr set out until he reached Madinah, dismounted at the door of the mosque, tied his mount, took the sword and headed for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who was sitting with some of the Ansar mentioning the battle of Badr and the blessing of Allah in it, saw him. When Umar saw that he had a sword with him, he was alarmed and said: "This dog, this is the enemy of Allah who stirred up trouble between us on the day of Badr and estimated our numbers for the enemy." Then Sayyiduna Umar got up, went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "This is Umayr bin Wahb; he has entered the mosque with his sword slung on. He is treacherous and wicked, O Prophet of Allah; do not trust him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him in." Sayyiduna Umar went out and ordered his companions to go and sit with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and to be on guard when Umayr came in to them. Then Sayyiduna Umar and Umayr came before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Umayr had his sword with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar: "Move back from him." When Umayr came near, he said: "An'imu sabahan" (Good morning), and this was the greeting of the Age of Ignorance. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has honoured us, O Umayr, with a greeting better than yours: our greeting is the greeting of the people of Paradise, al-Salam." Umayr said: "Your knowledge of it is quite recent." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has given us something better in its place. So what has brought you here, O Umayr?" He said: "I have come for my captive who is with you, for you are our kinsfolk and family." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then why is this sword on your neck?" Umayr said: "May Allah ruin these swords; did they benefit us at all? I simply forgot it (hanging) on my neck when I dismounted. And by my life, I have a sense of honour regarding it (the sword)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell me the truth, what has brought you here?" He said: "I have come only for my captive." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what condition did you agree with Safwan bin Umayyah in the Hijr?" Umayr was alarmed and said: "What condition did I agree?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You took it upon yourself, for him, that if you killed me he would support your children and pay off your debt, but Allah stands between you and that." Umayr said: "I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no true deity except Allah. O Messenger of Allah, we used to deny you regarding the revelation and the news of the heavens. This conversation that took place between me and Safwan in the Hijr is exactly as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has stated; no one knew of it except me and him, and then Allah informed you of it. So I believe in Allah and His Messenger; all praise is for Allah who set me on this path." The Muslims rejoiced at this when Allah guided him, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, at the moment he appeared a pig was dearer to me than Umayr, and today he is dearer to me than some of my own sons." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down, O Umayr; we will show you kindness." And he said to his Companions: "Teach your brother the Qur'an and free his captive for him." Umayr said: "O Messenger of Allah, I strove with all my might to extinguish the light of Allah, so all praise is for Allah who showed me this path and guided me. Now permit me to go to Quraysh and call them to Allah and to Islam; perhaps Allah will guide them and save them from destruction." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission, and he went to Makkah. Safwan bin Umayyah began saying in the gatherings of Quraysh: "Rejoice at a victory that will make you forget the battle of Badr." And he kept asking every rider who came from Madinah whether anything new had happened there, and that was what he was hoping for, until a man from Madinah came to them. Safwan asked him, and he said: "He has become a Muslim." The polytheists cursed him and said: "He has abandoned his religion." Safwan said: "I owe it to Allah never to benefit him with any spending and never to speak a word to him." Umayr came to them, invited them to Islam and counselled them sincerely with all his effort, and many people became Muslims.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Wahb bin Umayr took part in Uhud as a disbeliever. He was wounded and came to be counted among the slain. A man from the Ansar passed by him, recognised him and thrust his sword into his belly until it came out of his back, then left him. When night fell and the cold reached him, he made his way to Makkah and recovered. Then he and Safwan bin Umayyah sat together in the Hijr, and Wahb said: "Were it not for my dependants and a debt upon me, I would love to be the one who kills Muhammad." Safwan said to him: "Then how would you do it?" He said: "I am a swift man; no one can catch me. I will go to him, take him off guard, then strike him with the sword and join the horses, and no one will be able to catch me." Safwan said to him: "Your dependants will be with my dependants, and your debt is upon me." So he went out, had his sword sharpened and poisoned, and then set out for Madinah, intending nothing but to kill the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he reached Madinah, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, and he found this disturbing and distressing. So he said to the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I have seen Wahb, and his arrival has made me suspicious. He is a treacherous man; surround your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So the Muslims gathered around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Wahb came, stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Good morning to you, O Muhammad." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has given us something better than it in its place." He said: "I remember that you used to speak of this old greeting with pride." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What has brought you here?" He said: "I have come to ransom your captives." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What about the sword?" He said: "We carried it on the day of Badr, but we neither succeeded nor prospered." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What was it you said to Safwan in the Hijr: 'Were it not for my dependants and a debt upon me, I would kill Muhammad myself with my own hands'?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him his whole story, and Wahb said: "Hah, what did you say?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) told him again. Wahb said: "You used to tell us the news of the earth and we would deny you, but now I see you telling the news of the heavens. I bear witness that there is no true deity except Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah." Then he said: "O Messenger of Allah, give me your turban." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him his turban, and then he set out for Makkah. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When he came to Madinah he was more hateful to me than a pig, and when he returned (having embraced Islam) he was dearer to me than some of my own children."
