Amr bin Maymun (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: We were with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) when seven men came to him, and in those days he was healthy, before he became blind. They said: O Ibn Abbas, come with us, or (as he) said: O people, leave us alone. He said: Rather, I will go with you. So he got up and went with them, and we do not know what they talked about. Then he came back shaking out his garment and saying: Alas! Alas! These people have spoken (ill) of a man about whom things were said that I will tell you now. They have spoken (slanderously) about Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), whereas the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will send a man (with the banner) whom Allah will never disgrace." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was grinding at the hand-mill, though none of you would grind. He was brought suffering from an eye ailment, and he said: O Prophet of Allah, I can hardly see anything. He (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to both his eyes, shook the banner three times, then handed it to him, and victory was granted at his hands, and he brought Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his cousins: Which of you will stand by me in this world and the Hereafter? He asked three times, until he reached the last of them, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Prophet of Allah, I am your companion in this world and the Hereafter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are my wali (close companion) in this world and the Hereafter." The narrator said: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) with Surah al-Tawbah, then sent Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) after him. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Ali, perhaps Allah and His Prophet have become displeased with me? Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, but the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None may convey (the message) on my behalf except a man who is from me, and I am from him." The narrator said: And the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his garment over Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: "Allah only intends to remove all impurity from you, O people of the household, and to purify you thoroughly." And after Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), he was the first of the people to accept Islam. The narrator said: And Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sold his own life (for Allah's sake): he put on the garment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and lay down in his (peace and blessings be upon him) place. The narrator said: And the polytheists were throwing stones at (the bed of) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: Come to me, O Messenger of Allah! For Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) thought he was the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has already set off towards Bi'r Maymun, so go and catch up with him. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set off and entered the cave with him. And Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) kept being struck by stones, just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be struck, and he kept writhing in pain. He had wrapped his head in the garment and did not bring it out until morning; then, when morning came, he uncovered his head, and they said: You have turned out to be a wretch! We used to stone your companion and he would not writhe, yet you writhe; we found that strange. The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with the people for the expedition of Tabuk, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I go out with you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." So Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) wept, and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Are you not pleased to have the same position with me that Harun (peace be upon him) had with Musa (peace be upon him), except that you are not a Prophet? It is not fitting that I should go (from Madinah) except that you are my deputy (khalifah)." The narrator said: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said to him: "You are the wali of every believer after me." The narrator said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had all the doors of the mosque closed except the door of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so he could pass through the mosque even in a state of major impurity (janabah), because he had no other way besides it. The narrator said: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whomever I am the mawla (ally) of, Ali is his mawla too." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: So Allah Almighty has informed us in the Qur'an that He is pleased with the people of the Tree (who gave the pledge beneath it), and He knows what is in their hearts; so did He tell us that He became displeased with them afterwards? And he said: The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when he said: Permit me to strike off his neck, meaning Hatib (may Allah be pleased with him): "Would you really do that? And what do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order, and all the doors (of the mosque) were closed except the door of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
