A man from the people of Tariq bin Abdullah said: I was in the market of Dhu al-Majaz when a young man passed by wearing a suit of red striped cloth, and he was saying: O people, say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) and you will prosper. Behind him was a man throwing stones at him, who had made his heels and shins bleed, and he was saying: O people, he is a liar, so do not obey him. I asked: Who is this? They said: This is the lad of Banu Hashim who claims that he is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is his uncle Abd al-Uzza. Then, when Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had emigrated to Madinah and people had accepted Islam, we set out that day from al-Rabadhah, and with us was a woman of ours (riding in a litter). When we reached Madinah and came near its orchards, we put on clothes other than our own. Just then we met a man on the road, and he said: Where have these people come from? We said: We have come to get provisions of dates for our families. And we had a red camel standing with its halter on. He said: Will you sell me your camel? We said: Yes. He said: For how much? We said: For so many sa' of dates. He did not reduce anything from the price we had stated, and he took hold of the camel's halter with his hand, then went off with it. When he was hidden from us by the orchards, we said: By Allah, we have not done well; we have made a deal with someone we do not even know. A woman who was sitting said: I have seen a man whose face is like the moon on the night of the full moon. By Allah, he will not wrong you nor cheat you; I am the guarantor for your camel. Then a man came and said: I am the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to you. This is your dates; eat, eat your fill, and measure it out. He said: So we ate and ate our fill, and we measured it out and took it in full. Then we entered Madinah and came to the mosque, and there he (peace and blessings be upon him) was, delivering a sermon on the pulpit. We heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Give charity, for charity is better for you. The upper hand is better than the lower hand. And begin with those you support: your father, your mother, your sister and your brother, then whoever is closest to you, and then the next closest." At that, a man from the Ansar stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, these Banu Yarbu' killed a man from us in the Time of Ignorance, so let us take retribution from them. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, the punishment for a father's crime does not fall upon his child; listen, the punishment for a father's crime does not fall upon his child; listen, the punishment for a father's crime does not fall upon his child." He said it three times.
