It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about a stray animal that comes to his trough: will he have a reward for satisfying it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, there is a reward in giving water to every creature with a thirsting liver."

Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik al-Mudliji (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Messengers of the disbelievers of Quraysh came to us, fixing for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), each of them, (a reward equal to) a blood-money for whoever would kill them or capture them. He said: While I was sitting in one of the gatherings of my people, Banu Mudlij, a man from among them approached until he stood over us and said: "O Suraqah! I have just seen some figures on the coast, and I think they are Muhammad ((peace and blessings be upon him)) and his companions." Suraqah said: I recognised that it was them, but I said: "It is not them; rather, you saw so-and-so and so-and-so, who set out searching (for something)." Then I stayed in the gathering only a short while, then I got up, went into my house and ordered my slave-girl to bring out my horse, which was behind a hillock where she kept it ready for me. I took my spear and went out with it from the back of the house, trailing a line on the ground with my spear and keeping the upper end of the spear lowered, until I reached my horse. I mounted it and urged it on, and it carried me swiftly until I saw their figures. When I came close enough to them that they could hear a voice, my horse stumbled with me and I fell off it. I got up, reached with my hand for my quiver, took out the divining arrows and cast lots with them: should I harm them or not? What I disliked came out: that I should not harm them. I mounted my horse again, disobeyed the divining arrows and urged it on, and it carried me close to them again, until, when I drew near, I heard the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not look around, while Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) kept looking back frequently. (Then) the two forelegs of my horse sank into the ground up to the knees, and I fell off it. Then I scolded it and it got up, but its legs could hardly come out. When it stood upright, suddenly from the marks of its legs a smoke-like dust ('uthan) was rising up towards the sky. (Ma'mar said: I asked Abu Amr bin al-Ala': "What is 'uthan?" He remained silent for a while, then said: "It is smoke without fire." Ma'mar said: Al-Zuhri said in his narration:) Then I cast lots with the divining arrows, and the same thing I disliked came out: that I should not harm the two of them. So I called out to them offering safety; they stopped, and I rode my horse until I reached them. When I was held back from them in this way, it settled in my heart that the cause of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would prevail. I said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "Your people have fixed (a reward equal to) a blood-money for you." I told them news about their journey and what the people intended to do with them, and I offered them provisions and goods, but they took nothing from me, and they asked nothing of me except: "Keep our matter hidden." Then I requested him (peace and blessings be upon him) to write for me a document of safety by which I would be secure. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded Amir bin Fuhayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he wrote it for me on a piece of leather. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went on his way.

Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Makkah, emigrating to Madinah, Quraysh announced that whoever brought him back to them would receive one hundred she-camels as a reward. Sayyiduna Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was sitting in the gathering of my people when a man from among us came and said: "By Allah! I have just seen three riders who passed by me; I think it is Muhammad ((peace and blessings be upon him))." I signalled to him to keep quiet, and said: "They are only people of such-and-such tribe searching for a stray animal of theirs." He said: "Perhaps so," then fell silent. I stayed for a while, then got up and sent for my horse, and it was taken to the lower part of the valley. Then I brought out my weapons from behind my room, then took the arrows with which I used to cast lots, then put on my armour, then took out my arrows and cast lots with them, and the outcome I disliked came out: that he would not be harmed. But I hoped to bring him back and take the hundred she-camels. So I rode off on their trail. While my horse was galloping with me, it stumbled and I fell off it. I took out my arrows and cast lots again, and again the arrow I disliked came out: that he would not be harmed. But I refused and insisted on pursuing them, and I mounted it. When the people became visible to me and I looked at them, my horse stumbled, its two forelegs sank into the ground and I fell. It pulled out its leg, and smoke rose up behind it. Then I was certain that I had been prevented from reaching them and that he, Muhammad ((peace and blessings be upon him)), would prevail. So I called out to them and said: "Wait for me. By Allah! I will not trouble you, nor will anything you dislike reach you from me." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask him what he wants." I said: "Write for me a document as a sign between me and you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr! Write it." So he wrote it for me and threw it to me. I went back and kept silent, mentioning nothing of what had happened, until, when Allah granted His Messenger the conquest of Makkah and they had finished with the people of Hunayn, I set out towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the document he (peace and blessings be upon him) had written for me was with me. As I was heading towards him (peace and blessings be upon him), I found myself in the midst of a battalion of the Ansar, and they began pushing me with their spears, saying: "Get back, get back!" until, when I came close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was riding his she-camel, I was looking at his (peace and blessings be upon him) shins in the stirrup as though they were the heart of a palm trunk. I held out my hand with the document and said: "O Messenger of Allah! This is your document." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Today is a day of keeping promises and of goodness. Come near." So I accepted Islam. Then I remembered something I wanted to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and whatever came to my mind I asked: "O Messenger of Allah! A stray animal comes to our troughs which I have filled for my camels; will I have any reward for giving it water?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, there is a reward in giving water to every creature with a thirsting liver." Then I went back and sent my zakah animals to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
