It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with charity and he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned it, and I came to him with a gift and he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted it."

With the same chain it is narrated that Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a piece of gold like this one. If someone were placed in one pan of the scales and it were placed in the other, the price of my freedom would have outweighed him."

Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was a man from Jayy, and the people of my village used to worship piebald horses. I knew that they were not upon anything (of the truth). I was told that the religion I was seeking was in the west. So I set out until I reached Mosul. I asked about the best man there, and I was directed to a man who lived in a hermitage (sawma'ah). I went to him and said to him: I am a man from Jayy, and I have come seeking knowledge and to learn; take me in with you, I will serve you and keep your company, and you will teach me what Allah has taught you. He said: Very well. So I kept his company, and he gave me (food) just as he took for himself: vinegar, oil and grain. I stayed with him until death came to him. I sat by his head weeping. He said: What makes you weep? I said: What makes me weep is that I left my homeland seeking good, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, granted me your company; you taught me and treated me well, and now death has come to you and I do not know where to go. He said: I have a brother in al-Jazirah, at such-and-such a place; he is upon the truth. Go to him, convey my salam to him, and tell him that I have made my bequest to him, and that I have instructed you to keep his company.
When that man passed away, I set out until I reached the man he had described to me. I gave him the news (of the first man's death), conveyed to him the salam of his companion, and told him that he had died and had commanded me to keep his company. He took me in with him and gave me (food) just as I had been given (with) the other. I kept his company as long as Allah willed, then death came to him. When death was approaching him, I sat by his head weeping. He said: What makes you weep? I said: I left my homeland seeking good, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, granted me the company of so-and-so; he treated me well and taught me, then when death came to him he entrusted me to you, and you took me in, treated me well and taught me; and now death has come to you, and I do not know which way to turn. He said: Go to a brother of mine near the land of the Romans; he is upon the truth. Go to him, convey my salam to him and keep his company, for he is upon the truth.
When that man passed away, I set out until I reached him, and told him my story and the bequest of the one before him. He took me in with him and gave me (food) just as I used to be given. When death came to him, I sat by his head weeping. He said: What makes you weep? I told him my story and said: Allah granted me your company and you treated me well, and now death has come to you, and I do not know which way to turn. He said: (Now) nowhere. I do not know anyone left on earth who is upon the religion of Isa (peace be upon him). But now the time is near in which a prophet will be sent, or (perhaps he said) has been sent, in Tihamah. So stay on the road, and keep asking about him whoever passes by you, and when you learn that he has appeared, go to him, for he is the Prophet of whom Isa (peace be upon him) gave glad tidings. His sign is that between his two shoulders is the Seal of Prophethood, and that he eats from a gift but does not eat from charity.
So I would ask about him (the Prophet) whoever passed by me. Some people of Makkah passed by me and I asked them. They said: Yes, a man has appeared among us who claims that he is a prophet. I said to some of them: Will you take me as a slave of one of you, on condition that you let me ride (a mount) by turns and feed me some scraps of bread; then, when you reach your homeland, if he wishes he may sell me, and if he wishes he may keep me as a slave? One man among them said: I (will take you). So I became his slave until he brought me to Makkah. He put me in an orchard of his along with some Abyssinians who were already there.
I went out and made inquiries, and I met a woman from my homeland. I asked her and learned that her household had accepted Islam. She told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is in the Hijr with his companions when the sparrow chirps in Makkah, until, when the dawn lights up for them, they disperse. So I went to the orchard and kept going back and forth (there) during the night. The Abyssinians said to me: What is wrong with you? I said: My stomach is troubling me. I did this so that they would not miss me when I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
When the time came that the woman had told me about, when he and his companions sat there, I set out on foot until I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was sitting with his knees drawn up, and his companions were around him. I came to him from behind, and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recognised what I wanted, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) let his cloak hang loose. I saw the Seal of Prophethood between his (peace and blessings be upon him) two shoulders, and I said: Allahu Akbar, this is one (sign). Then I went back.
When the next night came, I picked some fine dates, then went until I reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and placed them before him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is this?" I said: This is a gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ate from it and said to the people: "Eat." I said: I bear witness that there is no god except Allah and that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me about my situation and I told him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and buy yourself (make a contract of manumission)." So I went to my master and said: Will you sell me myself (by freeing me)? He said: Very well, on condition that you grow a hundred date palms for me, and when they have grown, bring me gold equal to the weight of a date stone. I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Buy yourself for what he has asked of you, and bring me a bucket of water from the well from which you used to water those date palms." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated over it, then I watered (the date palms) with it. By Allah! I planted a hundred date palms, and not a single tree among them was left that did not grow. I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him that the date palms had grown. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a piece of gold. I took it and placed it in one pan of the scales, and a date stone was placed in the other pan. By Allah! That piece of gold did not rise from the ground. I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (and made the payment), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) set me free.

Sayyiduna Salman al-Khayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was a man from Jayy, which is a town of Isfahan. One day it happened that Allah put into my heart (the question of) the truth about the heavens and the earth. I went to a man who was reluctant to speak to people (about religious matters). I asked him: Which religion is the best? He said: What have you to do with this matter? Do you want a religion other than the religion of your father? I said: No, but I want to know who the Lord of the heavens and the earth is, and which religion is the best. He said: I do not know of anyone (with knowledge) of this except a monk in Mosul.
So I went to him and began living with him. I saw that he was in straitened circumstances in this world; he would fast by day and stand in prayer by night. I too began to worship as he did. I stayed with him for three years, then he passed away. I asked: To whom do you entrust me? He said: I do not know of anyone in the east who is on the way I am on; go to a monk beyond al-Jazirah and convey my salam to him.
So I went to him, conveyed the salam to him and told him that he (the first one) had passed away. I stayed with him too for three years, then he too passed away. I asked: To whom do you command me to go? He said: I do not know of anyone on earth who is on the way I am on, except an old monk in Ammuriyah, and I do not know whether you will be able to reach him or not.
So I went to him and began living with him, and I saw that he was a man of ample means. When the time of his death came, I said to him: Where do you command me to go? He said: I do not know of anyone on earth who is on the way I am on. But if you reach the time in which word is heard of a man who will appear from the house of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) - and I do not think that you will reach him, although I had hoped that I would reach him - then if you are able to be with him, do so, for he will be upon the true religion. His sign is that his people will say: A sorcerer, a madman, a soothsayer; and that he will eat from a gift but will not eat from charity; and that near the cartilage of his two shoulders will be the Seal of Prophethood.
Meanwhile a caravan came from the direction of Madinah. I asked: Who are you? They said: We are from the people of Madinah. We are a people of merchants who live by our trade. But a man has appeared from the house of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and has come to us, and his people are fighting him, and we feared that he would come between us and our trade; but he has taken control of Madinah. I asked: What do they say about him? They said: They say: A sorcerer, a madman, a soothsayer. I said: This is the very sign. Show me (the way to) your master.
So I went to him (the head of the caravan) and said: Will you take me to Madinah? He said: What will you give me? I said: I have nothing to give you, except that I become your slave. So he took me along. When I arrived (in Madinah), he put me to work in his date orchard. I would draw (water) and irrigate like a camel until my back and chest became sore from this work, and I found no one who could understand my language, until an old Persian woman came to draw water. I spoke to her and she understood what I said. I asked her: Where is the man who has appeared? Tell me where he is. She said: He will pass by you early in the morning, after he has prayed the dawn prayer.
So I went out and gathered some dates, and when morning came I came and presented the dates to him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is this, charity or a gift?" I indicated that it was charity. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it to these people" - his companions were with him - so they ate, and he did not eat. I said: This is a sign. When the next day came, I came with dates. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is this?" I said: This is a gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ate and called his companions, and they ate too. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me trying to look at the seal, so he understood and removed his cloak. I began to turn it over and look at it and to cling to it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with you?" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me and I told him my story. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You agreed with them that you would be a slave; buy yourself from them." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bought him on the condition that he would bring them a hundred date palms and forty uqiyah of gold, and then he would be free. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Plant the saplings," so he planted them. "Then go and lower the bucket into the well, and do not lift it until it rises by itself, for when it is full it will rise by itself; then sprinkle it on the roots (of the date palms)." So he did so, and the date palms grew in the quickest way. Then (an onlooker) said: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)! We have never seen anyone like this slave; this slave has a special standing. So the people gathered around him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him gold, in which there were forty uqiyah.
