Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul saying: "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse." I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him. Ibn Ubayy also came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and swore that he had not said it. The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and began to blame me, so I went to my house and slept, as though I were grieved. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me, and I went to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has confirmed your truthfulness and has excused you." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited these two verses: "They are the ones who say: 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse.' And to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand. They say: 'If we return to Madinah, the more honoured will surely expel from it the more humble'" [Al-Munafiqun: 7-8], until he completed both verses.
