Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a letter came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), in which was: "Three men came to me disputing over a boy, with whose mother they had had relations in the Jahiliyyah in a single period of purity, each of them claiming that he was his son. I judged between them by casting lots between them, and I assigned the child to the one whose lot came out, on condition that he pay the other two two-thirds of the blood money (diyah)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed so much that his (peace and blessings be upon him) molar teeth became visible, then he said: "In this matter I know nothing other than what Ali has judged."
