حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْعَلَّافُ قَالَا، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي أَنَّ عَوْفَ بْنَ مُجَالِدٍ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ: وَكَانَ امْرَأَ صِدْقٍ قَالَ: وَأَخْبَرَنِي وَنَحْنُ عِنْدَ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِزَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ: يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ، إِنَّا نَجْدُ فِي سُورَةِ الْفُرْقَانِ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ} [الفرقان: ٦٨]- إِلَى قَوْلِهِ - {وَكَانَ اللهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا} [النساء: ٩٦] ونَجِدُ فِي سُورَةِ النِّسَاءِ {وَمَنْ يَقْتُلْ مُؤْمِنًا مُتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَاؤُهُ جَهَنَّمُ خَالِدًا فِيهَا وَغَضِبَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَلعَنَهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُ عَذَابًا عَظِيمًا} [النساء: ٩٣] فَنَجِدُ لَهُ فِي إِحْدَاهُمَا تَوْبَةً وَفِي الْأُخْرَى مُسْجَلَةً، فَقَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ: «هَذِهِ الْغَلِيظَةُ بَعْدَ هَذِهِ اللَّيِّنَةِ بِسِتَّةِ أَشْهُرٍ، فَنَسَخَتِ الْغَلِيظَةُ اللَّيِّنَةِ»
Awf bin Mujalid al-Hadrami (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates (and he was a truthful man) that we were with Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him), and he related that I said to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu Sa'id, we find in Surah al-Furqan: "And those who do not invoke any other deity along with Allah, nor kill a soul which Allah has made sacred except by right, nor commit adultery" [al-Furqan: 68], up to the end of the verse: "And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful" [al-Nisa: 96]; and we find in Surah al-Nisa: "And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, abiding therein forever, and Allah is angry with him, has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment" [al-Nisa: 93]. So in one verse we find room for repentance from this sin, and in the other we find a severe threat without any exception. Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This severe verse was revealed six months after this lenient verse, so the severe verse abrogated the lenient verse."
حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ أَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنْ مُجَالِدِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، قَالَ: «نَزَلَتْ آيَةُ تَشْدِيدِ قَتْلِ النَّفْسِ الَّتِي فِي سُورَةِ النِّسَاءِ بَعْدَ الَّتِي فِي الْفُرْقَانِ بِسِتَّةِ أَشْهُرٍ» قَوْلُهُ: {وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا} [الفرقان: ٦٨]
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "The verse in Surah al-Nisa that is severe about killing a soul was revealed six months after this verse of Surah al-Furqan: 'And whoever does that will meet the penalty of sin' [Surah al-Furqan: 68]."
