The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a letter on red leather and sent it to Ri'yah al-Suhaymi, and he used it to patch his bucket. When news of this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a detachment, and they did not leave him any animal grazing or returning (from pasture), any family member or any property, but took it all. He escaped naked on a horse and reached his daughter, who was married among Banu Hilal. The gathering of the people was held in the courtyard in front of her door, so he went in to her from behind the houses. She said: What has happened to you? He said: Every kind of calamity has befallen your father; no animal grazing or returning, no family member and no property was left to him; all of it was taken. (The daughter) said: You had already been invited to Islam. And she herself had already accepted Islam. He said: (The daughter) threw a garment over him, and he went out and asked: Where is your husband? She said: He is in the saddle-camp. So he went to him, wearing a garment such that if he covered his head his buttocks were exposed, and if he covered his buttocks his head was exposed. He (the son-in-law) said: What is this state I see you in? He said: Every kind of calamity has befallen me. And he repeated to him what he had said to his daughter. He said: And I want to go to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) before my (remaining) property is also distributed. The son-in-law said: Take my riding camel. He said: I have no need of it, but give me the young camel. He said: So he took it and set off for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of the Fajr prayer while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: Stretch out your hand, and I will pledge allegiance to you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched out his hand, and when he was about to pledge allegiance on it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) pulled his hand back; he did this several times. Then he turned to him and said: "Who are you?" He said: Ri'yah al-Suhaymi. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of his upper arm and lifted him from the ground, then said: "This is Ri'yah al-Suhaymi; I wrote him a letter and sent it to him, and he used it to patch his bucket." Ri'yah said: My property and my son (restore them to me). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for your property, it has already been distributed, and there is no prospect of that now; but as for your son and your family, whichever of them you find, take him." He said: He went and then came back, and his son had recognised him. He returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: This is my son. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bilal! Go with him, and if he says that this is his son, hand him over to him." So he went with him, and he said: This is my son, and he was handed over to him. And he (Bilal) returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and reported that he had said that this was his son, and: I did not see either of them shed tears for the other. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the harshness of the Bedouins."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ri'yah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote him a letter and sent it to him, and he used it to patch his bucket. Then a detachment of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by him and drove off his camels; then he (Ri'yah) became a Muslim. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Whatever of your property you find exactly as it was (unchanged) before it is distributed, you have the most right to it."
