Amr bin Hayyan al-Ta'i (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Umayrah al-Sinbisi (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give the morning meal to the people of three mosques and give them 'qurtumah' - meaning hays (a dish made by mixing dates, ghee and dried curd) - to drink, although he had only one shirt, which served him both at home and for the Friday prayer.

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Amr al-Ta'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over the army of Dhat al-Salasil, and in that army he also sent with him Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and the senior ones among his Companions. They set off until they halted at the mountain of Tayyi'. Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Look for a man who can guide us along the way. They said: We know of no one but Rafi' bin Amr, for he used to be a 'rabil' in the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) - the narrator said: I asked Tariq: What is a rabil? He said: A robber who raids a people alone and steals - Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we had completed our expedition and I reached the place from which we had set out, I singled out Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), so I came to him and said: O you with the khilal (the wooden pin fastening the cloak)! I have singled you out from among your companions, so give me something which, if I preserve it, I will be like you. He said: "Can you remember your five fingers?" I said: Yes. He said: "Bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger, establish the five prayers, give the zakah if you have (wealth), perform Hajj to the House, and fast Ramadan - have you memorised it?" I said: Yes. He said: "And one more thing: never become a commander even over two people." I said: Will leadership be found in anyone other than you, the people of Badr? He said: "Soon it will spread until it reaches you and those below you. When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), people entered Islam: among them were those who entered and Allah guided them, and among them were those whom the sword compelled. They are those under Allah's protection and Allah's neighbours, in Allah's safekeeping. When a man is a commander and the people wrong one another, and he does not take the right of some of them from others, Allah takes revenge on him. A man's neighbour's goat is taken, and he remains with his muscles swollen in anger for the sake of his neighbour - while Allah stands guard behind His neighbour." Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I stayed for a year, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed caliph, so I rode to him and said: I am Rafi'; I met you on such-and-such a day at such-and-such a place. He said: "I remember." I said: You had forbidden me from leadership, then you yourself mounted something greater than that - (the leadership of) the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "Yes, and whoever does not establish the Book of Allah among them, upon him is the bahlah of Allah" - meaning the curse of Allah.

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Amr al-Ta'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me during an expedition or a Hajj journey, and I observed them closely, and I did not see anyone among them in a better state than Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who had a cloak wrapped around him for protection against heat and cold - and then he narrated the full hadith.
