Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The delegations of the Arabs came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and no delegation came to us that was harder-hearted, or more likely to be such that Islam had not settled in their hearts, than the delegation of Banu Hanifah.

Muhammad bin Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: There was something remarkable in al-Rajjal bin Ghanmawayh by way of humility, constant devotion to the recitation of the Qur'an, and goodness, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it. One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while al-Rajjal was sitting with us in a group, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of these people is in the Fire." Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I looked at the people, and there were Abu Hurayrah al-Dawsi, Abu Arwa al-Dawsi, al-Tufayl bin Amr al-Dawsi and al-Rajjal bin Ghanmawayh. I kept looking, marvelling and saying: Who is this wretched one? When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Banu Hanifah turned back from their religion, so I asked: What became of al-Rajjal bin Ghanmawayh? They said: He fell into fitnah (trial); he is the one who testified in favour of Musaylimah, against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had made him a partner in his affair after him. I said: Whatever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said is the truth. And al-Rajjal was heard saying: Two rams butted each other, and the dearer of them to us is our own ram.
