Al-Zuhri said: Salim bin Abdullah told me, when I asked him about renting out farmland, that Rafi' bin Khadij told Abdullah bin Umar that his two paternal uncles, who had taken part in Badr, told him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden renting out farmland. So Abdullah bin Umar stopped renting it out, though he used to do so before that. Al-Zuhri said: I asked Salim: Do you yourself rent it out? He said: Yes. I said: Then what about the hadith of Rafi' bin Khadij? Salim said: Rafi' made this matter very strict upon himself.

Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) told me that his father (Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) used to do that (rent out land) until it reached him that Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade renting out land."
