It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! We live in a land where we are afflicted by the hardship of hunger, so what is lawful for us of carrion? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you have no evening milk, no morning milk, and not even any greens, then you may eat of it."

Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man said: O Messenger of Allah! We are in a land where we are afflicted by the hardship of hunger, so what is fitting for us of carrion? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you have no morning milk, no evening milk, and not even any greens, then you may eat of it."
Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is how al-Walid bin Muslim narrated it from al-Awza'i, from Hassan, from Marthad or Abu Marthad, and that is a mistake; the correct version is what Abdullah bin Kathir al-Qari narrated from al-Awza'i.
