Sayyiduna Thabit bin al-Harith al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Jews used to say, if a small child of theirs died: He is a siddiq (righteous). This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Jews have lied. There is no soul that Allah creates in its mother's womb except that it is either wretched or blessed." Upon that, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "He knows you best, since He produced you from the earth, and when you were embryos in the wombs of your mothers" [Surah al-Najm: 32], the whole verse.
