Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we had a cooked goat. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Rafi'! Hand me the foreleg." I handed it and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ate it. Then he said: "Hand me the foreleg." I handed it and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ate it. Then he said: "Hand me the foreleg." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Does a goat have more than two forelegs? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had you remained silent, you would have kept finding forelegs for as long as I kept asking."

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Jibril (peace be upon him) came seeking permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission, but he was slow in coming. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took his cloak and went towards him while he was standing at the door. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We had given permission. He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image. Then a puppy was found in one of their houses. Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me as soon as morning came, and I did not leave a single dog in Madinah without killing it. Then there was a woman living far away who had a dog that barked to protect her. I felt pity for her, so I left it and came back. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me again, so I went back to the dog and killed it too. Then the people said: O Messenger of Allah! Of this kind of creature which you have ordered to be killed, what is lawful for us? Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "They ask you what has been made lawful for them. Say: Lawful for you are the good things" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 4].

I said: O Messenger of Allah! Why did you not make it a single ritual bath? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is purer and better."

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Baqi' al-Gharqad, walking behind him, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May you not be guided, may you not be guided." Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I turned around but saw no one, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the matter with me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not mean you; rather I mean the occupant of the grave, who is asked about me and claims that he does not know me." And it turned out to be a grave on which water had been sprinkled when its occupant was buried.
