Udaysah bint Uhban said: When death approached my father, he said: "Do not shroud me in a stitched garment." When he passed away and was washed, they sent word to me to send the shroud, so I sent the shroud to them. They said: A shirt? I said: My father forbade me to shroud him in a stitched shirt. So I sent to the washerman, and my father had a shirt with the washerman; it was brought, he was dressed in it, and he was carried away. I closed my door and followed him, then I came back, and the shirt was in the house! So I sent word to those who had washed my father and asked: Did you shroud him in a shirt? They said: Yes. I said: Is it this one? They said: Yes.

Udaysah bint Uhban bin Sayfi (may Allah have mercy on her) said: When Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Basrah, he came to my father (Uhban), stood at the door and said: As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Will you not come out and help me against these people? My father said: Certainly, if you wish. O slave girl, hand me the sword. So the slave girl handed him the sword, and he placed it in his lap, then drew it from its sheath and said: "My close friend and your cousin (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded me that when there is fighting between two tribes of the Muslims, I should take up a sword of wood." Then he drew it out a little while it was in his lap and said: If you wish, I will go out with you with this. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have no need of you.

The daughter of Uhban said: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Uhban and said: What prevents you from following me? He said: My close friend, meaning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), advised me; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be tribulation and division. When that happens, break your sword and take up a sword of wood." And when his condition became grave, he instructed his family to shroud him and not to dress him in a shirt. But we dressed him in a shirt, and in the morning the shirt was on the clothes peg.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uhban bin Sayfi al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "If you see two men of my Ummah fighting each other over wealth, then at that time get a sword of wood ready."

Udaysah bint Uhban (may Allah have mercy on her) said: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Basrah, he came to our house and asked: Is Abu Muslim here? We said: Yes. He came out to him, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Will you not help us in this matter? He said: Certainly. O slave girl, bring me that sword. She brought his sword, and he drew it from its sheath, and it was a sword of wood! Abu Muslim said to him: Your cousin, meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), charged me that if there is tribulation among the Muslims, I should take up a sword of wood. At this Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back angrily and said: We have no need of you, nor of your sword.

Abd al-Kabir al-Ghifari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Udaysah bint Uhban bin Sayfi (may Allah have mercy on her) told me that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to her father, stood at the door, asked permission, and said: O Abu Muslim, what prevents you from striving in this matter and taking your share of it? He said: What prevents me from that is a covenant that my close friend and your cousin (peace and blessings be upon him) took from me; he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded me that if tribulation breaks out, I should take up a sword of wood. So here it is with me; if you wish, I will fight with it.

Zahdam bin al-Harith al-Ghifari said that Sayyiduna Uhban bin Sayfi (may Allah be pleased with him) told me: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Uhban, listen: if you remain alive after me, you will see disagreement among my Companions. If you remain alive until that day, make your sword out of palm stalks." He said: So I made my sword out of palm stalks. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me, took hold of the two doorposts, then gave greetings and said: O Uhban, will you not come out? I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Abu al-Hasan! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me, or commanded me, or advised me, or told me this beforehand (Ibn Zahdam was in doubt), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uhban, if you remain alive after me, you will see disagreement among my Companions. If you remain alive until that day, make your sword out of palm stalks." So I brought out my sword to show him, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned away.
