Jabir bin Subh (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I travelled with al-Muthanna bin Abd al-Rahman al-Khuza'i (may Allah have mercy on him) to Wasit. Whenever he ate, he said Bismillah, and when it came to the last morsel he would say: "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end)." I asked him about that, and he said: My grandfather, Sayyiduna Umayyah bin Makhshi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), told me that a man was eating in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not say Bismillah. When he reached the last morsel, he said: "In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end." At that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan kept eating with him until he said 'at its beginning and its end'; then Satan vomited up everything he had eaten."

Sayyiduna Umayyah bin Makhshi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting, and a man was eating and did not say Bismillah until only one morsel of his food remained. Then he said: "Bismillah, at its beginning and its end." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed, then said: "Satan kept eating with you, and when you mentioned the name of Allah, he vomited up everything that was in his stomach."
