حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَدَحْتُ اللهَ بِمَدْحَةٍ، وَمَدَحْتُكَ بِمَدْحَةٍ، قَالَ: «هَاتِ وَابْدَأْ بِمَدْحَةِ اللهِ»
Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have praised Allah, and I have also praised you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite it, and begin with the praise of Allah."
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، وَأَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ
Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah!" Then the narrator narrated a hadith similar to it.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا مَعْمَرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ السَّعْدِيُّ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ التَّمِيمِيِّ، قَالَ: قَدِمْتُ عَلَى نَبِيِّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، إِنِّي قُلْتُ شِعْرًا أَثْنَيْتُ فِيهِ عَلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمَدَحْتُكَ، قَالَ: «أَمَّا مَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى اللهِ فَهَاتِهِ، وَمَا مَدَحْتَنِي بِهِ فَدَعْهُ» فَجَعَلْتُ أُنْشِدُهُ، فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ طُوَالٌ أَقْنَى، فَقَالَ لِي: «أَمْسِكْ» فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ قَالَ: «هَاتِ» فَجَعَلْتُ أُنْشِدُهُ، فَلَمْ أَلْبَثْ أَنْ عَادَ، فَقَالَ لِي: «أَمْسِكْ» فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ، قَالَ: «هَاتِ» فَقُلْتُ: مَنْ هَذَا يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ الَّذِي دَخَلَ قُلْتَ: أَمْسِكْ، وَإِذَا خَرَجَ قُلْتَ: هَاتِ؟ قَالَ: «هَذَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ، وَلَيْسَ مِنَ الْبَاطِلِ فِي شَيْءٍ»
Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' al-Tamimi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Prophet of Allah! I have composed a poem in which I have extolled Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and praised you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What you have said in extolling Allah, recite it; and what you have said in praising me, leave it." So I began to recite, and a tall man with an aquiline nose came in. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Stop." When he left, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite." I began reciting again, and only a short while had passed when he came back, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Stop." When he left, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite." I said: "O Prophet of Allah! Who is this man, that when he comes in you say 'Stop', and when he leaves you say 'Recite'?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is Umar bin al-Khattab, and he has nothing to do with falsehood."
