Muhammad bin al-Aswad, the son of Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Khalaf (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that his father, Sayyiduna al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him), was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was taking the pledge of allegiance from the people at Qarn Masqalah. The narrator said: Qarn Masqalah lies near the houses of Abu Thumamah; it is the place whose front part faces the house of Ibn Amir and whose back part faces the house of Ibn Samurah and what is around it. Sayyiduna al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taking the pledge of allegiance from the people. Men, women, young and old, all came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and pledged allegiance to him (peace and blessings be upon him) upon Islam and the testimony." I asked: "What is the testimony?" Muhammad bin al-Aswad told me: "Upon the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah."
