Sayyiduna Iyas bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not beat the female servants of Allah." Thereupon the women became bold, and their behaviour towards their husbands became bad. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, since you forbade beating women, they have become bold and have begun to behave badly towards their husbands. the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then beat them." So the people beat their women that night, and then many women came complaining of the beating. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Last night seventy women came to the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), complaining of the beating. By Allah, you will not find those (men) to be the best among you."
