Sayyiduna Iyas bin Abi Dhubab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not beat the female servants of Allah." So the people stopped beating them. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: By Allah, the women have become bold towards their husbands. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that they be beaten, and many women came to the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). When morning came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Last night seventy women came to the family of Muhammad, all of them complaining of the beating. By Allah, I do not consider those (men) to be the best among you."
