Qabisah bin Jabir al-Asadi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was in the state of ihram when I saw a deer, so I shot at it, and my arrow struck the root of its horn, and it fell (dead) on its face. Something (of unease) arose in my heart about that, so I came to Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask him. Beside Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) I found a fair man with a soft face, and when I looked, it was Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) my question, and he turned to Abd al-Rahman and asked: "Do you think a sheep would suffice for him?" He said: Yes. So Umar ordered me to slaughter a sheep. When we got up and left him, a companion of mine said: The Commander of the Believers could not (himself) give you a proper verdict, until he asked that man (Abd al-Rahman). Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) overheard some of what he said, and he began beating him with his whip. Then he turned towards me to beat me as well, so I said: O Commander of the Believers, I said nothing; it was he who said it. So he left me. The narrator said: Then he said: "You wanted to kill game while in ihram and also to overstep the verdict!" Then he said: "A person has ten traits: nine are good and one is bad, and that one bad trait spoils all the rest." Then he said: "And beware of the company of young men."

It is narrated from Ibn Ishaq that Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) had lost his two front teeth, his foremost teeth were broken, he worked with his left hand, and he was lame. He had been wounded on the day of Uhud, which broke his teeth, and he received twenty or more wounds, some of which struck his foot, and so he became lame.
