Qabisah bin Jabir said: I never saw any man give large amounts of wealth without being asked more than Talhah bin Ubaydullah. Sufyan said: His family used to say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had given him the title "al-Fayyad" (the one who gives abundantly).

Talhah bin Yahya narrates from his grandmother - who was his (Talhah's) wife Su'da - that she said: One day Talhah came in to me and I sensed a heaviness in him, so I asked: "What is the matter? Perhaps something on our part has displeased you, so that we may make amends for it?" He said: "No, you are indeed the best of wives for a Muslim man; but wealth has accumulated with me and I do not know what to do with it." She said: "Then why does it grieve you? Call your people and distribute it among them." So he said: "O boy! Call my people to me." She said: I asked the treasurer: "How much did he distribute?" He said: "Four hundred thousand."

Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the title "Talhat al-Khayr" (Talhah of goodness) on the day of Uhud, "Talhat al-Fayyad" (Talhah who gives abundantly) in the expedition of Dhu al-Ushayrah, and "Talhat al-Jud" (Talhah of generosity) on the day of Hunayn. Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: (The word "al-Ushayrah") is read with both sin and shin; with sin it means hardship, and with shin it is the name of a place.

Ishaq bin Yahya bin Talhah narrates from his paternal uncle Musa bin Talhah that Talhah slaughtered a camel and dug a well on the day of Dhu Qarad, then fed the people and gave them water to drink. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Talhat al-Fayyad!" And so he came to be called Talhat al-Fayyad.
