Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "After me there will be twelve caliphs: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq will not remain long; and the master of the mill of the Arabs will live praiseworthy and will be killed as a martyr." A man asked: Who is he, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umar bin al-Khattab." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to Uthman and said: "And as for you, the people will demand that you take off a shirt with which Allah has clothed you. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you take it off, you will not enter Paradise until the camel passes through the eye of the needle."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) set out as an emigrant to the land of Abyssinia, and with him was Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). News of them failed to reach the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would go out himself, waiting for news of them. Iyas bin Salamah bin al-Akwa' narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him), that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Uthman to the people of Makkah, and in the meantime he (peace and blessings be upon him) took the Pledge of Ridwan from his Companions, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the pledge on behalf of Uthman by placing one of his hands upon the other. The people said: Congratulations to Abu Abdullah (Uthman), who is performing tawaf of the House in safety. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if he were to remain there for such-and-such a length of time, he would not perform tawaf until I perform tawaf."
