حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ، ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، ثنا أَبُو الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ شَدَّادِ بْنِ الْهَادِ، قَالَ: «رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ، عَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ عَدَنِيُّ غَلِيظٌ، ثَمَنُهُ أَرْبَعَةُ دَرَاهِمَ أَوْ خَمْسَةُ، وَرَيْطَةٌ كُوفِيَّةٌ مُمَشَّقَةٌ، ضَرْبُ اللَّحْمِ، طَوِيلُ اللِّحْيَةِ، حَسَنُ الْوَجْهِ»
Abdullah bin Shaddad bin al-Had said: I saw Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) on the pulpit on a Friday. He was wearing a coarse Adeni waist-wrap worth four or five dirhams, and a reddish Kufan sheet. He was of medium build, with a long beard and a handsome face.
حَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، ثنا خَالِدُ بْنُ نِزَارٍ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ مُوسَى بْنِ طَلْحَةَ، قَالَ: «كَانَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ يَتَوَكَّأُ عَلَى عَصًا، وَكَانَ أَجْمَلَ النَّاسِ، وَعَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ أَصْفَرَانِ إِزَارٌ، وَرِدَاءٌ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ الْمِنْبَرَ، فَيَجْلِسَ عَلَيْهِ»
Musa bin Talhah said: On Fridays, Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) would lean on a staff. He was the most handsome of people, and he would be wearing two yellow garments, a waist-wrap and an upper sheet, until he came to the pulpit and sat on it.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ، ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ بَدْرٍ، عَنِ الْجَرِيرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ حَزْمٍ الْمَازِنِيِّ، قَالَ: «رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَمَا رَأَيْتُ قَطُّ ذَكَرًا، وَلَا أُنْثَى أَحْسَنَ وَجْهًا مِنْهُ»
Abdullah bin Hazm al-Mazini said: I saw Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and I never saw any man or woman with a more handsome face than his.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الْبَغَوِيُّ، ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حُجْرُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْغَسَّانِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ الْقَارِيُّ، قَالَ: «رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَبْيَضَ اللِّحْيَةِ»
Abdullah bin Awf al-Qari said: I saw Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and his beard was white.
حَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ: «رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَصْفَرَ اللِّحْيَةِ»
Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd said: I saw Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and his beard was yellow.
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، ثنا مَوْلًى لِعُثْمَانَ، عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، قَالَ: بَعَثَنِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، بِصَحْفَةٍ فِيهَا لَحْمٌ، فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ، وَرُقَيَّةُ جَالِسَةٌ، فَمَا رَأَيْتُ اثْنَيْنِ أَحْسَنَ مِنْهُمَا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، فَجَعَلْتُ مَرَّةً أَنْظُرُ إِلَى رُقَيَّةَ، وَمَرَّةً أَنْظُرُ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعْتُ، قَالَ لِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَدَخَلْتَ عَلَيْهِمَا؟» قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ. قَالَ: «هَلْ رَأَيْتَ زَوْجًا أَحْسَنَ مِنْهُمَا» ، قُلْتُ: لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَقَدْ جَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ مَرَّةً إِلَى رُقَيَّةَ وَمَرَّةً إِلَى عُثْمَانَ قَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ «وَهَذَا كَانَ قَبْلَ نُزُولِ آيَةِ الْحِجَابِ»
Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) with a bowl of meat. I went in to him and Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was sitting there. I have never seen two people more beautiful than them (may Allah be pleased with them both). I would look at Ruqayyah one moment and at Uthman the next. When I returned, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "Did you go in to them?" I said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you seen a couple more beautiful than them?" I said: "No, O Messenger of Allah. I kept looking at Ruqayyah one moment and at Uthman the next."
Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This incident was before the revelation of the verse of hijab.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَلَدُ قَيْسِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ بْنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ الْقُرَشِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ عَلَى ابْنَتِهِ وَهِي تَغْسِلُ رَأْسَ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، فَقَالَ: " يَا بُنَيَّةُ: أحْسِني إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ فَإِنَّهُ أَشْبَهُ أَصْحَابِي بِي خُلُقًا "
Abd al-Rahman bin Uthman al-Qurashi narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to his daughter while she was washing the head of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my daughter, treat Abu Abdullah well, for he is the most similar of my Companions to me in character."
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ الرَّازِيُّ، ثنا الْخَلِيلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رُقَيَّةَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، امْرَأَةِ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، وَفِي يَدِهَا مُشْطٌ، فَقَالَتْ: خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ آنِفًا رَجَّلْتُ رَأْسَهُ، فَقَالَ: «كَيْفَ تَجِدِينَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ؟» قُلْتُ: بِخَيْرٍ، قَالَ: «أَكْرِمِيهِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ أَشْبَهِ أَصْحَابِي بِي خُلُقًا»
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went in to Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the wife of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and she had a comb in her hand. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has just left me; I combed his hair. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How do you find Abu Abdullah (Uthman)?" I said: "Good." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Honour him, for he is among those of my Companions most similar to me in character."
