It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that al-Buraq was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) and Jibril (peace be upon him) both mounted it. It set off with them; whenever it came to a mountain its hind legs rose, and whenever it descended its forelegs rose, until they passed through a dark, foul-smelling land and reached a spacious, fragrant land. I said: "O Jibril! We passed through a dark, foul-smelling land and reached a spacious, fragrant land." He said: "That was the land of Hell, and this is the land of Paradise." He says: Then I passed by a man who was standing in prayer. He asked: "O Jibril! Who is this with you?" I said: "Your brother Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." He welcomed me and supplicated for blessing. He said: "Ask ease for your Ummah." He says: I asked: "O Jibril! Who is this?" He said: "Your brother Musa (peace be upon him)." I said: "The one whose (raised) voice and complaining to his Lord are well known?" He said: "Yes, this trait of his and his sharpness are well known." He says: Then we went on, and I saw some lamps and light. I asked: "O Jibril! What is this?" He said: "This is the tree of your father Ibrahim (peace be upon him)." I said: "Shall I go near it?" He said: "Yes." We drew near it, and he supplicated for blessing for me and welcomed me. Then we went on to Bayt al-Maqdis. I tied the mount to the ring to which the prophets used to tie (their mounts), then I entered the mosque, and all the prophets were presented before me, those whom Allah has named in His Book and those whom He has not named. I led them in prayer, except the people of the cows (ulul-baqar): Isa, Musa and Ibrahim (peace be upon them).
