حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا الْمَسْعُوديُّ، حَدَّثَنِي الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْعَيْزَارِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» ، قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» ، قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» ، ثُمَّ سَكَتَ، وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Which deed is the most excellent? He said: "Performing the prayer at its time." I said: Then what, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Then kindness to parents." I said: Then what, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Jihad in the path of Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent, and had I asked him for more, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have told me more.
