Alqamah bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was in Syria, and the people said to him: "Recite (the Qur'an) to us." So he recited Surah Yusuf to us. A man among the gathering said: "Was it revealed like this?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Woe to you! I recited it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: 'You recited well.'" Then, while he was arguing further with him, he noticed the smell of wine on him. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You drink filth (wine) and you also deny the Qur'an! I will not rise from here until the prescribed punishment (hadd) is carried out on you."
